Applaud Costa Rica for Commitment to Renewable Energy

Target: Luis Guillermo Solís, President of Costa Rica

Goal: Applaud Costa Rica for setting new record in the use of solely renewable energy.

With more than a month left in the year, the Costa Rican government has announced that it has already powered the country for three hundred days using only renewable energy sources. Costa Rica gets 99 percent of its energy from renewable sources, compared to the U.S., which only generates 15 percent of its energy from renewable sources.

Costa Rica’s energy primarily comes from five renewable sources: hydroelectric, wind, geothermal, biomass, and solar. These renewable sources produce significantly fewer greenhouse gas emissions than fossil fuels do. In other countries like the U.S., electricity production accounts for an enormous amount of greenhouse gas emissions: in 2016, U.S. electricity production generated over 1.8 billion metric tons of CO2. Fossil fuels also produce huge amounts of air and water pollution, which are linked to ecosystem degradation and adverse human health outcomes. It is heartening to see that Costa Rica is committed to protecting the wonderful biodiversity that it contains. Costa Rica is home to many endangered species, including the Central American tapir, the blue-sided leaf frog, and the black-handed spider monkey. Costa Rica’s actions to prevent global warming and reduce air and water pollution will help keep these species from becoming extinct.

Using renewable energy sources slows down global warming and produces significantly less air and water pollution, with benefits for ecosystems and human health. Sign this petition to applaud Costa Rica for their commitment to renewable energy.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Solís,

I am writing to commend you on your commitment to renewable energy. The use of renewable energy will help to protect Costa Rica’s delicate ecosystems and amazing biodiversity. It will also have beneficial effects on human health. Renewable energies, especially wind, solar, and hydroelectric, produce much less air and water pollution than fossil fuels do. Air pollution alone results in millions of premature deaths worldwide and has been linked to increased risk of stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, and poor sperm quality.

The use of renewable energy shows your commitment to the health of your country’s ecosystems and people. I hope that other countries will follow your example and protect the future of our planet.

Sincerely,
