Justice for Mother Wolf Murdered by Poachers

Target: Curt Melcher, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife Director

Goal: Find and punish whoever is responsible for illegally killing a female grey wolf.

A four-and-a-half-year-old female wolf and mother of several pups was discovered slaughtered in northeastern Oregon. She is believed to have been the latest victim of illegal wolf poaching in the state, which has claimed the lives of at least 10 wolves ever since the wild canids were removed from the state’s endangered species list. We must demand justice for this innocent wolf and for others like her that have been senselessly killed.

Ever since wolves first re-emerged in the state nearly a decade ago from neighboring Idaho, the animals have been at odds with ranchers who view them as a threat to their livestock. With the wolf population in Oregon now believed to be at least 100 strong, incidents of poaching have increased as well. While the wolves are no longer considered endangered, killing them is still illegal and has the potential to destabilize the population.

Wolves are a necessary part of the forest ecosystem in Oregon. They help keep large herbivore populations in check, and their threat to livestock is largely overstated. Thanks to this latest incident, a family of wolves is now missing their mother, and their long-term future may be in jeopardy. Sign this petition and demand that that the poacher responsible be found and severely punished.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director Melcher,

Wolves remain threatened in the state of Oregon thanks to their continued slaughter at the hands of poachers. The latest incident involving a mother wolf who was found slain in Wallowa County is a tragic loss for the state’s wolf population. While wolves are no longer listed as endangered, this wholesale killing cannot be permitted, and those responsible must be found and brought to justice.

Ranchers and others often unfairly target wolves as livestock killers or for allegedly posing a threat to human life. Both of these statements are grossly overblown and must not be used as excuses to justify illegal killings. We urge you to do all you can to ensure that whoever is responsible for this latest poaching incident, or any of the others that have occurred in recent years, be found and receive the maximum penalty possible.

Sincerely,
