Don’t Sentence Award-Winning Reporter to Death by Deporting Him

Target: Lee Cissna, Director of the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services

Goal: Don’t send award-winning reporter back to deadly danger in his home country.

An award-winning reporter whose life is threatened in Mexico due to his investigative reporting may soon be sent back to his home country and into danger. Emilio Gutierrez came to the United States seeking asylum, but now the very place he has sought safety in threatens him.

Gutierrez has been waiting for asylum status for eight years, as the government has delayed and slowed his hearings. His life is on the line and his family’s safety hangs in the balance. When he was finally given a hearing, he was sentenced to deportation.

If sent back to Mexico, Gutierrez will likely join fellow journalists who have been kidnapped, tortured, and killed. Gutierrez has been a symbol of the free press in a time where danger lurks around every corner for journalists around the world. He must be protected.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Cissna,

Emilio Gutierrez, a journalist who’s won international awards for his investigative reporting, came to the United States years ago seeking asylum. However, the country he hoped would save him may very well kill him by sending him back to a country where his and his family’s lives are in danger.

Gutierrez cannot be deported. If that happens, both the Mexican and United States governments will have failed him and the rights of the press to report freely and safely. I ask that Gutierrez remain safely in America.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
