Teach Human Rights in Schools

Target: Anil Swarup, Secretary of India’s Department of School Education & Literacy

Goal: Make human rights a required part of school students’ curriculum.

Students in India are not taught of the history, lessons, and importance of human rights. This must end. Students across the country are urging the government to make human rights a mandatory part of their education.

“Knowledge of human rights is essential for us to understand and access our rights both as children and when we grow up,” the students wrote in a petition to the government. To not teach them human rights at such a young age keeps them blind to the rights, privileges, and opportunities they are entitled to as both citizens and human beings.

Teaching human rights will lead to a world in which fair and equal treatment will be recognized and defended. Sign the petition and side with the students of India. Demand that the government make human rights lessons a mandatory part of schools’ curricula.

Dear Secretary Swarup,

In your nation, students grow up without ever learning of the rights afforded to them as both citizens and human beings. This must change. Human rights must be taught in the classroom so that a new generation of citizens grows up being able to recognize and defend the rights afforded to them.

Students in your country have recently filed a petition with your government. I ask that you listen to and support them by making human rights lessons and history a mandatory part of your nation’s educational curriculum.
