Stop Forced Evictions in Nigerian City

Target: Muhammadu Buhari, President of Nigeria

Goal: Stop violent evictions and destruction of homes in Lagos, Nigeria.

Thousands of people in the city of Lagos, Nigeria are losing their homes and even their lives as their government hurries to make room for fancy hotels, condos, and office blocks. The people are not even given a chance to prepare, forced from their homes by gunfire as everything they own is burned to the ground.

The agenda is crystal clear: Nigeria’s government is barely trying to hide the fact that the people residing on the waterfront properties are ‘in the way’ of their industrial dreams. The needs of living people are not even taken into consideration; the developers only see profit to be made and treat the residents as objects to be thrown out to make the city look better. This is cruel, inhumane, and unacceptable.

In June, a court ruled these forced evictions unconstitutional and ordered an agreement to provide alternative housing for the victims. But the government has yet to comply with the ruling. Thousands of people’s lives are at stake, as is their overall well-being. Sign this petition to demand Lagos’s government put the needs of the people first.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Buhdari,

In June, a court ruled that you were to stop forcibly evicting citizens from their homes before destroying their property, and to provide alternative housing options for the displaced people. However, your government has yet to comply with this ruling and continues to treat these people as less-than-second-class citizens ‘in the way’ of fancy property and industrial dreams.

Many have died in the chaos, most from drowning as they were forced to the waterside by gunfire. A woman was nearly crushed to death when a bulldozer began to demolish her house with her still in it. People are starving and struggling to survive as everything they own is taken from them. This is inhumane and unacceptable, and it must stop. You must comply with the court ruling. Give people more time to prepare to leave their homes and provide them with shelter before you tear down any more houses.

Sincerely,
