Don’t Drug Racing Greyhounds With Cocaine

Target: Richard Corcoran, Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives

Goal: Do not allow trace amounts of cocaine to be present in the systems of Florida’s racing greyhounds.

Greyhounds in Florida, already controversially being forced to race each other, may be legally allowed to be given cocaine if a new bill passes. Misleadingly named the “Greyhound Safety Act,” this legislation would permit “environmental levels” of “prohibited substances” in the racing dogs’ systems rather than forbidding the use of those substances. This means that, if it passes, the number of dogs given cocaine is likely to vastly increase (already nearly 50 greyhounds in Florida’s racing system tested positive for cocaine since 2008).

About 8,000 dogs are a part of Florida’s greyhound racing industry, and are put at risk by this bill. According to reports, one greyhound dies every three days in Florida as it is. Florida Representative Jared Moskowitz says that although he cannot speak for the House Speaker, he called the Florida Greyhound Association’s introduction of this bill a “satire,” and Representative Carlos Guillermo Smith tweeted, “Only in (Tallahassee) would the industry solution to the epidemic of cocaine and steroid use in greyhounds be to legalize cocaine and steroid use in greyhounds.” Sign below to demand the protection of these innocent greyhounds and the dismissal of this ridiculous bill.

Dear House Speaker Corcoran,

The absurdly named “Greyhound Safety Act” is, as Rep. Moskowitz puts it, a “satire” that must not be passed. Rather than protecting dogs who are already cruelly being forced to race in Florida’s greyhound racing industry, the bill instead puts those 8,000 dogs at risk.

The “Greyhound Safety Act” would make it legal for trace amounts of cocaine to be detected in a racing dog’s system. This is inhumane and dangerous—the exact opposite of a ‘safety act.’ Already, a greyhound reportedly dies every three days in Florida. Please do not allow that number to skyrocket by legalizing the use of cocaine in racing greyhounds. I urge you to reject the “Greyhound Safety Act.”

  1. This called “sport” should be banned not only controlled. We need to contact legislators to STOP the cruel treatment inflicted on these docile dogs.

  2. Jeannette Allan says:

Appalling… again the same prevalent human greed at the root of this evil.

  3. this monsterous so called sport should be banned what the hell is wrong with the US to allow this cruelty all animal racing should be stopped they run the horses way to young that’s why so many break their legs they aren’t even developed yet I know this one of my best friends and her husband were both jockeys and they told me this it’s disgusting and these poor dogs are so abused what’s wrong with spca down there or do they care

  4. gabriela torres says:

Not only are they abused but ‘abandoned’ and ‘mistreated’ once they are of no profit to their owners.
I thought that ‘cocaine’ was an illegal substance and punished by law — so who is selling it? Florida is infested with cocaine and various other drugs, I am surprised the authorities have not investigated where the cocaine comes from and fight to stop ‘the new bill’ whereby Florida is allowed to give cocaine to greyhounds …
Unbelievable how greedy and inhumane people could be!

  5. Forget banning the drugging of racing greyhounds. Ban the racing of greyhounds, period!

  6. Gen Lovyet Agustsson says:

stop drugging them! just stop it.

  9. Alice Knight says:

Everyone who attends these dog races should be held accountable for continuing with the on-going abuse towards these dogs. I would think each individual has a conscience.
It’s appalling the way humans treat animals to fulfill their own desires. Cocaine? On top of everything else these innocent dogs have to endure each day, you have the audacity to inflict further cruelty. Come to your senses and reflect on what you are contributing to.
