Ensure Health Care Benefits for Florida Restaurant Employees

Target: John Metz, Florida Restaurant Franchise Owner

Goal: Don’t cut the hours of hundreds of employees to avoid paying for their health care

Recently, Florida restaurant franchise owner John Metz announced that he would be imposing a 5 percent surcharge on customers’ bills in order to pay for increased cost of President Obama’s health care plan. However, he also announced that he would be reducing the hours of hundreds of employees, effectively reducing them from full-time to part-time. Metz claims he is trying to save money for the fees associated with health care, but he is not required to provide health care to part-time employees. He is unfairly punishing his employees in order to promote a political agenda.

As Metz’s employees work fewer hours, they will be making less money. Many of them will need a second job. Metz claims to feel pity for them, but also refuses to take responsibility for his decision, instead blaming President Obama’s policies. Metz also is using this decision to encourage his employees to agree with his political views: “What we’re going to ask them to do is to speak to their elected officials, to try to convey what this means in terms of their jobs and their livelihoods.” He is forcing his employees to seek a second job in order to earn a living wage, and taking advantage of their situation to make a political statement.

Metz also seeks to place blame with his customers by encouraging them not to tip the employees. “If I leave the prices the same, but say on the menu that there is a 5 percent surcharge for Obamacare, customers have two choices. They can either pay it and tip 15 or 20 percent, or if they really feel so inclined, they can reduce the amount of tip they give to the server, who is the primary beneficiary of Obamacare.” He is encouraging customers not to tip the servers because they are supposedly receiving this expensive health care, yet he is cutting their hours so he will not be required to provide them health care. Metz has created a situation for his employees in which they will receive a lower paycheck, no health care, and smaller tips. He refuses to take responsibility for this, and instead places the blame completely on President Obama. Sign the petition to urge Metz to change his ways and provide his employees with a living wage and adequate benefits.

Dear Mr. Metz,

Recently, you announced you would be reducing the hours of hundreds of your employees because of the high cost of health care. You claim to be saving money to pay for these employees’ care, but you are reducing their hours so that you will not be required to provide them care. You are doing this as a reaction to President Obama’s health care plan, and making it clear that Obama is the reason for this reaction. You are unfairly punishing your employees in order to make a political statement.

I ask you not to reduce your employees’ hours. These employees do not deserve to suffer a severe loss of income because of your political beliefs. You are taking hours and wages from employees in order to pay for health care that they will no longer be eligible to receive. You are also encouraging your customers to further punish your employees by leaving smaller tips. Do not continue to force your employees to suffer as part of your political agenda.
