Target: President Francois Hollande and the French Government
Goal: To thank his government for formally recognizing the National Coalition of Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces.
Recently in Doha, Qatar, Syria’s fractured opposition came together in an attempt to put aside their differences and present a united front. After a week of talks, the rebels formed the National Coalition of Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces. The hope of the new coalition was that their unification would provoke western powers to recognize them as a valid opposition force – much in the way that the rebels in Libya were recognized. After nearly 20 months of rebellion, the Syrian opposition was finally unified.
On Tuesday, November 13, France became the first European nation to recognize the fledgling opposition group. Just as they had done in Libya, France was the first to step forward recognize the rebels trying to overthrow a brutal dictator. The support the French are giving now to the Syrian rebels is a step towards deposing the Assad regime and establishing the coalition as the sole representative of the Syrian people.
French President Francois Hollande also stated that the French government would begin debating whether or not to arm the Syrian opposition. Previously the fear in European governments was that any weapons supplied to the rebels would inevitably find their way into the hands of extremists. Now that there is a strong leadership structure in place those fears should begin to dissipate. Arming the rebel forces makes sense, as it will allow the rebels to compete with the government’s security forces and potentially bring a quicker end to the conflict.
Sign this petition to thank President Hollande and the French government for leading the way in Syria. By providing recognition of the opposition forces, France lends legitimacy to a movement that had very little previously. Perhaps with this new authority, the opposition may gain the additional international support they need to bring a quick resolution to a conflict that has already claimed an estimated 40,000 lives.
Dear President Francois Hollande,
We would like to thank you for formally recognizing the National Coalition of Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces. Just as your government had done in Libya, France was the first to recognize the opposition forces. The support you have given the rebels is a critical first step towards overthrowing the Assad regime and establishing the coalition as the sole representative of the Syrian people.
France’s support for the rebels will also influence the international community to become re-involved with the 20-month-old struggle in Syria. The hope is that the Assad regime will step down before the 40,000 death toll rises. The French recognition of the Syrian opposition will hopefully be the first step towards stopping the conflict.
