Target: Dr. Russell Dohner
Goal: Thank doctor for outstanding service and dedication to patients
Dr. Russell Dohner wakes up early every morning to make hospital rounds and then heads over to his office to see patients. Always on-call and never taking a vacation in over 50 years, Dr. Dohner puts his patients first and is committed to their utmost wellbeing. Thank this exemplary doctor for all of the time and care that he has given to his community.
It is almost 10 a.m. when Dr. Dohner arrives at his office, ready to see patients who have signed in. He and his staff do not use computers, so patients’ information are all handwritten and placed in files. Seeing patients in the order that they signed in, he charges the same fee he has charged since the 1970s: $5, up from $2 per visit when he first started in 1955. He has kept this setup since he first started practicing in Rushville, a small town in Illinois. He was initially studying to become a cardiologist at the time, but changed plans when a doctor asked him to practice in Rushville. So he moved there and then stayed once the other doctor left.
Life has not been easy and Dr. Dohner has sacrificed greatly. His marriage ended because his wife could not adjust to small-town living. He never remarried but made caring for people his full-time passion instead. He works seven days a week, has never taken a vacation, and is always on-call for his patients. One great story demonstrating his care is that of Carolyn Ambrosius’s pregnant mother. She had seen an obstetrician and was told that she or her baby would die during childbirth. She then saw Dr. Dohner and he visited her every day during her pregnancy. Many times he would eat with the family after he had examined her. The baby boy was born healthy and both he and the mother did fine.
Dr. Russell Dohner is a remarkable, healing practitioner that truly cares for people. Sign the petition below thanking Dr. Dohner for changing the lives of those in his community and making the world a better place.
Dear Dr. Russell Dohner,
Thank you for becoming a doctor and dedicating your whole life to caring for and helping others. You chose this profession because you wanted to make a difference in people’s lives. You stayed in this profession because you genuinely cared for others.
Your selfless actions and generosity towards your patients is unheard of in today’s medical profession. Charging only $5 per visit and waiving the fee for those who cannot afford it allows people to get well even when they have little or no money. With insurance companies and big corporations controlling medical care, and medical costs skyrocketing every day, it is nice to know that personalized and quality, affordable health care still exists.
The Rushville community knows you well because you have touched so many people’s lives. Their children’s children will know you well because you have built a legacy of compassion that will last for generations to come. Thank you for being an amazing role model that doctors, nurses, and others in the health field can look up to.
