Commend UPS for Withdrawing Funding from the Boy Scouts over Anti-Gay Policy

Target: UPS, Eduardo Martinez President of The UPS Foundation

Goal: Support UPS’s decision to withdraw funding from the Boy Scouts of America over the Boy Scouts’ anti-gay policies.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) reports that UPS and The UPS Foundation will be withdrawing funding from the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) because of its continued anti-gay policies. Since reaffirming these policies in July of 2012, the BSA has lost funding from the Intel Foundation and now has lost the support and donations from UPS. Sign this petition and commend organizations such as Intel and UPS for upholding their nondiscriminatory policies and for refusing to provide funding for organizations that condone and follow discriminatory policies.

The Intel Foundation was once BSA’s largest corporate founder, giving $700,000 in donations to the BSA in 2010. The same year, UPS gave $150,000 to the BSA. Although both of these donors exercised anti-discriminatory policies within their own organizations, it took the media backlash following the BSA’s affirmation of its anti-gay policy in July of 2012 in order for Intel and UPS to withdraw grants and donations to the BSA. Zach Wahls, the founder of Scouts for Equality, stated in a press release following Intel’s decision to withdraw support, ‘Companies that support the LGBT community simply can’t be in the business of funding organizations that discriminate. Frankly, by sending this message, Intel is upholding the true spirit of Scouting better than the BSA is today,’ adding after UPS withdrew their support of the BSA that ‘UPS showed true bravery today… That bravery is what Scouting is all about.’

The BSA’s anti-gay policy has come under scrutiny in recent years from scouts and scout leaders who do not agree with the organization’s dated and prejudicial practices. Time and again, scout groups, scout leaders, and scouts have asked and petitioned the BSA to formally repeal these policies, and the BSA has refused. We can only hope that, partnered with the heroic efforts of organizations such as GLAAD and scouts like Zach Wahls, that Intel and UPS can help send a message to the BSA that these anti-gay policies are hurtful and destructive to the driving force behind the groups like the BSA, and must be repealed. Sign this petition and commend Intel and UPS for refusing to continue to provide funding to the BSA.

Dear UPS and President of The UPS Foundation Eduardo Martinez,

We wish to commend you for withdrawing support from the Boy Scouts of America. The BSA continues to follow dated and prejudicial policies that seek to discriminate against individuals based on their sexual orientation. This discrimination is a violation of basic human rights and is a despicable abuse of power in the inclusion and exclusion of BSA members. Thank you for supporting the basic human right of equality and for upholding this belief in your business practices.

By withdrawing support from the BSA and by upholding your own company’s anti-discriminatory policies, you will send a message not just to the BSA, but any organization that seeks to deny equality and respect based on race, gender, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran or military status, pregnancy, age, and religion–that prejudice will not be tolerated and certainly not funded. Although advocates for human rights wish that organizations such as the BSA would update their policies and their beliefs based on the fact that discrimination is morally wrong rather than simply bad for business, we recognize this as a step in the right direction. A step we take towards a better future with organizations such as UPS and The UPS Foundation stepping in time with us.

  1. UPS and Intel will never see my business again for they have come down against the health and safety of children. No young boy should have to face a confusing advance from a member of his own sex who finds him “attractive” nor should the purpose and mission of the Scouts…morally straight, clean…be twisted to support the values of this community which is diametrically opposed to all that we hold dear. It is a parent’s fundamental right to choose with whom their child will associate and it is unconstitutional for one group to try to abridge our right to free association.

    • Dee, I’m sorry that you feel such hatred towards gay people and view them as such a threat. This is not about young boys hitting on one another, and indeed, there have always been gay boys in scouts (I was one). This simply states that gay boys do not have to live in fear and pretend to be straight for the sake of participating in an organization that helps to teach life skills and good values in young men – and those good values include acceptance of people who differ from them, be it on the grounds of race or sexual orientation.

I sincerely doubt you will withdraw your business from Intel, and I doubt you used UPS much to start with. In any case, I’ll make up for any business you refuse these companies by doing my best to bring them extra business and I applaud their support in promoting an end to the bullying and social ostracism of LGBT youth.
