Target: Latin American Coalition and other counter-protesters
Goal: Thank counter-protesters for taking a stand against hate at a white supremacist rally
The National Socialist Movement held a rally to bring attention to illegal immigration; instead, the overpowering chants were messages against hate by a group of people gathered to protest the protest. The counter-protesters were the only thing that could be heard.
The National Socialist Movement is described on its website as the largest and most active National Socialist party in America. The core beliefs include: defending the rights of white people everywhere, preservation of European culture and heritage, strengthening family values, economic self-sufficiency, reform of illegal immigration policies, and promotion of white separation.
The Latin American Coalition was one of the main organizers of the counter-protest. The group is a community of Latin Americans, immigrants, and allies promoting full and equal participation of all people in the civic, economic, and cultural life of North Carolina through education, celebration, and advocacy. The organization has made, and will continue to make, great strides in justice and equality. Anarchists and members of the Occupy movement were also present opposing the white power rally.
The rally drew hundreds of people, the majority of which turned out to be counter-protesters. In numbers nearing 250, the counter-protesters set out on a mission to show the National Socialist Movement how ridiculous and outdated its exclusive thinking is.
The counter-protesters dressed in clown outfits and blew whistles and squeaky toys to outshine the National Socialist Movement’s message of hate. When they would chant “white power,” the counter-protesters would shout “wife power” or “white flour.” Outnumbering the white supremacists five to one, it was a clear demonstration of how messages of white power will not be tolerated. It became visually clear how many more people were in favor of equality and human rights than those who were not. Sign the petition to thank these counter-protests for proving that equality can prevail.
Instead of the National Socialist Movement being highlighted in the media, it was the counter-protesters challenging the ideals of the white supremacist group. The only thing covered in the media from the recent rally in North Carolina was your message of equality and inclusion. Your tactics in pointing out the ridiculousness of the National Socialist Movement’s intolerant thinking were pivotal. Dressing up in clown costumes and surpassing the hate sent a powerful message that equality will be the only thing tolerated.
Thank you for being brave enough to stand up to groups like the National Socialist Movement who believe only their way of thinking is right. You set a great example of how influential a protest against hate can be.
