Target: Parti Québécois government
Goal: Work to reduce fossil fuel usage and slow local and global climate change
Quebec’s major environmental groups are demanding that the Parti Québécois (PQ) government begin reducing their reliance on fossil fuels, and instead begin to focus more on energy efficiency and renewable energy. Climate change is already apparent in the region and environmentalists hope that by adapting their energy use they can help to slow the negative affects of said change. Reducing fossil fuel use will also help free up billions of dollars to invest elsewhere in the economy.
Limiting fossil fuel dependency will benefit both the economy and the environment. According to Karel Mayrand of the David Suzuki Foundation, cutting Quebec’s fossil fuel use could free up as much as $14 billion per year to invest in other parts of the economy. Additionally it will provide priceless help towards mitigating climate change. The effects of climate change are obvious especially in the St. Lawrence River estuary, where the water temperature was 2 degrees above the average in August. Continued climate change is expected to have unpredictable effects on the natural environment and may even put native species at risk for extinction.
By working to reduce fossil fuel usage and phasing in alternative energies the region has the opportunity to make a huge impact, as well as to become leaders in the alternative energy industry. Protesters across Canada are standing together and will not stop until a change is made.

Dear Government Officials,
Please take this call to action seriously and with haste. Climate change exists and its is occurring right now. By reducing your fossil fuel usage and working to be more energy efficient you have the power to create a positive change for your own environment and economy.
It is not a new idea that we all must wean ourselves off our fossil fuel dependency. By limiting fossil fuel usage in Quebec and introducing alternative energies you have the opportunity to be a leader and set a new standard for other governments to follow.
Please put the environment and your economy first when considering what steps to take next. It is something we will all have to adjust to eventually; why not start now?
