Target: Dr. Ahmad Mohammad Ali Al-Madani, President of the Islamic Development Bank Group

Goal: Thank Dr. Al-Madani and the Islamic Development Bank Group for supporting the effort to eradicate polio.

The world has the opportunity to eradicate polio, a disease that has killed hundreds of thousands of children across the globe. By providing adequate medical care to the few remaining countries afflicted by the disease, polio can join smallpox as being the only human disease to be completely eradicated. With the right international aid commitments, polio can be brought to an end and countless lives can be saved. One of these vital aid pledges to fight polio was recently made by the Islamic Development Bank Group.

The IDBG pledge to support the governments of Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan in their fight against polio will help financially as well as politically. The weight that they carry among their member countries will allow for aid groups to better administer vaccines to populations. In Pakistan alone, the group intends to fund the eradication effort there with US$227 million that will allow the country to run eradication programs through 2015. The IDBG also intends on financing similar projects in Afghanistan, which will help improve the stability of the government there.

The Gates Foundation reports that polio cases are at their lowest level ever. Only Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan have outbreaks remaining in their countries. So far this year, only 145 cases have been diagnosed. There has also been a deluge of support from the international community. This does not mean the disease is defeated, however, as it is difficult to detect outbreaks before they happen and increased vigilance and funding is always needed. World Health Organization chief Margaret Chan recently said in a statement that, “polio eradication is at a tipping point between success and failure.” Now is not the time for donors and activists to forget the issue. Sign this petition to thank the Islamic Development Bank Group for their vital contribution to the effort to eradicate polio.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Dr. Ahmad Mohammad Ali Al-Madani,

Thank you for your group’s recent pledge to the effort to eradicate polio once and for all. With adequate medical care, polio can soon become the second human disease to be eradicated after smallpox.

So far this year, only 145 cases of polio have been diagnosed. There has also been a deluge of support for polio treatment from the international community. This does not mean the disease is defeated, as it is difficult to detect outbreaks before they happen and increased vigilance and funding is always needed. WHO chief Margaret Chan recently said in a statement that, “polio eradication is at a tipping point between success and failure.” Now is not the time for donors and activists to forget the issue. That is why your contribution to the fight against polio is so important.

Thank you for proving that something good can be done in the countries where the wild polio virus is still circulating, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria. The dedication shown by your group will be vital to ending this terrible disease.

Sincerely,
