Target: Texas Tech Football Coach Tommy Tuberville
Goal: For college football head coach to apologize for striking assistant football coach, knocking off his headset and hat
In Texas Tech’s football game against Kansas, Texas Tech received an offensive penalty on fourth down in the third quarter. Head Coach Tommy Tuberville flew into a rage, screaming and yelling at Assistant Coach Kevin Oliver for the penalty and then striking at his head. Demand that Coach Tuberville apologize for his violent behavior that humiliated his fellow coach and tarnished Texas Tech’s reputation.
Football is an extremely physical sport. Players who have the ball try to score a touchdown without getting tackled and thrown to the ground. Even if a player does not have the ball in his hand, players are still tackling other players because they are blocking or pushing other players out of the way. An aggressive sport by nature, taunting and hard-hit tackles by players can result in a fight or two on the field after a play is over. But players are still expected to show sportsmanship–and coaches are too. But Coach Tommy Tuberville flew off the handle when his team got called for a penalty and displayed extremely unsportsmanlike behavior.
Penalties can send coaches off on tirades directed at players, referees or fellow coaches. Coach Tuberville’s screaming and yelling on the sidelines after a called penalty was not unexpected. But he crossed the line when his rage switched from verbal to physical action and he struck at his assistant coach’s head, knocking off the coach’s headset and hat. Sportscasters reporting the game were stunned and didn’t know what to say. When asked about the incident after the game, Coach Tuberville explained that he was just trying to grab him to take him off the field, and the headset just kind of “fell off”.
Coach Tommy Tuberville’s outrageous and abusive act towards his fellow coach was unacceptable. Sign the petition below demanding that Coach Tuberville apologize for his violent actions and out-of-control rage.
Dear Coach Tommy Tuberville,
Texas Tech is a great football team and you must be proud to be a part of their football program. But your recent behavior of striking at Assistant Coach Kevin Oliver’s head tarnished its program’s reputation and your own. Please apologize for your rude and out-of-control behavior and demonstrate an example of better leadership from now on.
We all know that football is a passionate and intense sport, both on and off the field. But passion should never result in abuse. Striking a fellow coach is humiliating and wrong, setting a bad example for the whole team and staff. You have young, impressionable young men looking up to you and you can choose to impact their lives negatively or positively. Which one will it be?
When asked about your behavior by the press, you offered up an excuse instead of manning up to your childish behavior. Captured on video, the public can clearly see you screaming at Coach Oliver and going after him, using your hand to strike at his head. Please do not try to explain away your out-of-control anger. Apologize to Coach Oliver, to your players, and to the school, proving that you are a capable and great leader that others can look up to and be proud of.
