Applaud Initiative to Guarantee Free and Accessible Contraception

Target: Robert DeLeo, Massachusetts Speaker of the House

Goal: Praise the Massachusetts House of Representatives for improving access to contraceptives.

In October, the Trump administration rolled back the requirement that employers must include access to birth control in their health insurance plans. This action is detrimental to the health and well-being of all American women, especially low-income women. But the state of Massachusetts is fighting back. A bill requiring employers to provide birth control without co-payments in insurance plans has passed the House of Representatives in a landslide: 138 to 16.

The Trump administration’s actions could deprive untold numbers of women of access to birth control, with disastrous consequences. Access to birth control reduces maternal mortality and improves women’s engagement in the work force, allowing them to be economically self-sufficient. When Colorado increased access to long-acting birth control, the state saw a 40 percent reduction in teen births and a 42 percent reduction in teens seeking abortions. Clearly, access to birth control is essential for the health and well-being of both women and infants. A 2006 study estimated that 49 percent of pregnancies in the U.S. were not planned — a rate much higher than most other developed countries. Yet the Trump administration has made it harder for women to access birth control, which will likely increase the rate of unplanned pregnancies.

The administration’s rollback is not only disastrous for the health and well-being of women, it will also have negative economic consequences. Unintended pregnancies are extremely costly for the government and improving access to birth control actually saves the government money. For every dollar that the government spends on contraceptive services, they save nearly six dollars in healthcare spending.

Ensuring that women have access to contraception is essential for women’s health and has massive economic benefits. Sign this petition to applaud the Massachusetts House of Representatives for upholding women’s rights to healthcare.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. DeLeo,

I am writing to thank you and the other members of the Massachusetts House of Representatives who voted to pass Bill H.4009, which increases contraceptive access for women. Thank you for taking concrete steps to promote women’s health, even as the Trump administration makes clear that it considers women to be second-class citizens.

Allowing women to decide if and when to have children is key to the financial stability and well-being of women and their families. We applaud your dedication to this worthy cause.

Sincerely,
