Target: Seana Willing, Executive Director of State Commission on Judicial Conduct
Goal: Fire judge seen on video beating his daughter
After a nearly year-long suspension during an investigation for child abuse, Judge William Adams will be allowed to resume his judicial duties. His daughter, Hillary Adams, set up a secret recording of her father vigorously beating and screaming at her. Hillary then uploaded the video online as a plea for help.
The video lasts an excruciating eight minutes and has been viewed over 7 million times. It depicts an enraged father upset because his daughter downloaded music and games off the Internet. Hillary is screaming “stop” while her father lashes her repeatedly with a belt screaming at her to “get over the bed.” Adams can also be heard off camera emotionally abusing Hillary, while her agonizing cries plea for him to stop. Hillary’s mother gets involved at one point, but it is clear she is only trying to appease Hillary’s father. They have since gotten divorced.
After the video went viral, Judge Adams was suspended during the Texas Commission on Judicial Conduct’s investigation. While on paid suspension, Adams received almost a year’s salary and allowances totaling up to nearly $150,000. Since the statute of limitations on child abuse had run out by the time the video was released, his punishment for beating his child was only a publicly issued warning, which carries no real consequence.
Judge Adams has been allowed to return to the courtroom providing he agree to waive his right to appeal the warning. He will also be prohibited from ruling on cases involving child abuse, since the Commission on Judicial Conduct feels he is no longer able to remain impartial in those cases.
It is a judge’s duty to uphold the highest respect for the law. Judge William Adams blatantly disregarded this every time he physically beat his child with a belt and emotionally berated her. Behavior like this should result in jail time, yet Adams got off with a warning and is now allowed back into the courtroom. Demand that Judge William Adams is fired and is forbid from overseeing cases in a court of law.
Dear Seana Willing,
Child abuse is illegal, and yet when a Judge is recorded beating his daughter he only receives a metaphorical slap on the wrist. There is physical proof of South Texas Family Law Judge William Adams beating his daughter, yet his only punishment was a paid suspension and a public warning, which essentially mean nothing.
The statute of limitations had expired by the time the video went viral, but viewers are still able to ascertain a sense of the kind of man Judge Adams is. This is a typical case of the justice system failing. His daughter, Hillary, will have to live with the effects of her father’s physical and emotional abuse for the rest of her life. People who abuse their own children should not be put in a position of power. Please reevaluate your investigation and fire Judge William Adams. He does not deserve a place of honor in a court of law.
