Demand that Oregon Sheriff Apologize for Performing a Forcible Eviction

house

Target: Daniel Staton, Sheriff of Multnomah County, Oregon

Goal: Apologize for forcibly evicting a couple from their Northeast Portland home

The sheriff’s office of Multnomah County, Oregon has recently forcibly evicted a couple living in Northeast Portland. This is following another unpopular eviction by the Multnomah County Sheriff and has led the community to become outraged.

The couple in question claim their home was illegally sold in a bank auction. The wife had been battling cancer, which her insurance company labeled a “pre-existing” condition. The husband had lost his job in construction due to economic downturns. The bank that held the mortgage to the home knew this and refused to rework a plan with the couple. The deputies arrived at the house in unmarked cars, broke down the front and back doors to the home, and removed the wife while she was still in her pajamas.

While a bank does have a right to mortgage payments, it should not be allowed to use the sheriff’s office as a personal goon squad to break down doors and force people out of their homes. Police officers should not get involved in such matters until all measures have been tried between the bank and the residents, and it is apparent that this was not the case here. The fact that the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office used such sneaky tactics to get inside the home is truly concerning.

Sign the petition letter below, and demand that the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office apologize to the couple for using such unwarranted tactics in a home foreclosure, especially one with suspect circumstances. Officers of the law are supposed to protect the citizens of their jurisdiction, not be the bullying arm for financial institutions. Multnomah County needs to take responsibility for what has occurred.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Daniel Staton, Sheriff of Multnomah County, Oregon,

Recently, your office forcibly evicted a couple from their home in Northeast Portland. This is in the wake of the recent unpopular eviction your department also performed. The community in which you serve is now outraged.

The couple your office forcibly removed from their home had been facing serious issues, such as cancer that had been labeled as a “pre-existing condition” by an insurance company and the loss of a job due to economic downturns. The bank refused to come to a more feasible payment plan with the couple, and illegally sold their home at auction.

The use of law officers in private matters should be a last resort. It is apparent that this was not a last resort, and indeed, the sheriff’s office was used as the bullying arm for banks rather than the protector of the citizens in its jurisdiction. Your office left in unmarked cars, broke down both doors to the home, and forcibly removed the wife while she was still in her pajamas. These actions are not excusable.

Please apologize to this couple and take responsibility for this excessive use of force. The people should never be afraid that the police are going to bust down their doors when they have not violated any criminal laws. Actions need to be taken to make this situation right.

Sincerely,
