Target: Speaker John Boehner
Goal: To renew the production tax credit on wind energy.
According to the American Wind Energy Association, the American wind industry employed approximately 85,000 people in 2009 to construct and maintain windmills. Since then, about 10,000 of those jobs have disappeared. With the threat of the federal tax credit on wind energy disappearing, companies have been announcing layoffs, faced with a higher cost of doing business. Wind power executives say that ending the tax credit will make investors nervous about investing in wind power. Demand that John Boehner and House Republicans schedule a vote on a continued production tax credit on wind energy in the United States.
Boehner and House Republicans are threatening thousands of American jobs by not bringing this issue to a Congressional vote. As the speaker of the House, Boehner has control over the House schedule and has refused to bring the subject to a vote. This may be because of the fact that the tax credit will expire at the end of 2012. Boehner has been under pressure from deficit activists worried about the cost of the tax credit who are encouraging him to let it expire. But by letting the credit die, Boehner and those he leads are threatening American jobs and energy independence.
Republicans are turning their backs on an opportunity to strengthen American energy independence. The call for energy independence from other countries is normally a talking point for Republican politicians and their supporters. Without this tax credit, wind power will not be as competitive with other sources of energy. Sign this petition to tell Speaker John Boehner that creating jobs is more important than winning political points.
Dear Speaker Boehner,
We ask that you show your support for creating American jobs by extending the production tax credit for wind energy. Regardless of the cost, job creation must be a priority for the American Congress.
The American Wind Energy Association reported that today there are 75,000 jobs in the United States within the wind industry. Since 2009, 10,000 jobs have been lost. By extending this credit, the number of layoffs will decrease and investor confidence will increase.
We also ask that the credit be increased so that American energy independence is strengthened. Diversifying our energy sources, and one that is environmentally responsible, should be a top priority for the politicians that Americans have put in office. Please renew the production tax credit.
