Support Proposed Gay Marriage and Adoption Bill in France

Gay Marriages NYC

Target: Francois Hollande, President of France

Goal: Show support for the proposed bill that would allow for gay marriage and adoption in France.

French President, Francois Hollande and his cabinet recently approved a bill that would legalize gay marriage in France and allow gay couples to adopt. The bill will be debated by Parliament in early 2013. Sign this petition to show support for this bill, which is a huge step toward providing equal rights to all French citizens, regardless of sexual orientation.

France currently allows for civil unions between gay couples, but does not grant them the right to marry or to adopt. Adoption is only granted to married couples. Other European nations, such as Sweden and Germany, already allow for gay adoption. Although Germany refers to gay unions as ‘partnerships’ rather than ‘marriages,’ Germany gives the same tax benefits to gay partnerships as they do heterosexual marriages.

This bill has already been met with much resistance from both the Catholic Church and several town leaders. Seventy-five cities have held protests and over 1,000 mayors have signed a petition against the bill. According to the BBC, the head of the French Council of Bishops, Cardinal Andre Vingt-Trois, described gay marriage as ‘the ultimate deceit.’ This antiquated mentality is rooted in the belief that marriage should be a reproduction contract, not a union of love and respect. Conservatives do not have to oppose this bill just because the Catholic Church does not recognize homosexual rights. As Kristina Schroder, Germany’s Minister for Family Affairs and member of the conservative Christian Democratic Union stated, ‘In homosexual partnerships, people take long-term responsibility for each other. They are living conservative values.’

The intolerant and misleading remarks by those in opposition to gay marriage and adoption cannot be allowed to lead the debate between now and 2013 when Parliament will decide on the issue. The BBC reports that gays in France make up 6.5 percent of the electorate, compared with practicing Catholics at 4.5 percent. Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault correctly stated, ‘Our society is evolving, lifestyles and mentalities are changing. The government will respond to that.’ We must stand together and fight for equal rights for all citizens. Laws need to evolve beyond the small-minded few to include the open-minded majority. Sign this petition and show support for gay marriage and gay adoption in France.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Francois Hollande,

We commend the fact that fighting for gay rights was a platform during your campaign and that you have recently passed a bill to Parliament that upholds this pledge. We understand the difficulty that you face in going against the grain and working to legalize gay marriage and adoption and we stand with you in our support of legalizing gay marriage and adoption in France.

As French citizens, gay couples deserve the same rights to marriage and adoption that heterosexual couples have. Marriage and child-rearing are human rights and should not remain heterosexual privileges. By allowing gay couples the right to marry and adopt, France will join several other European nations such as Britain, Sweden, and Germany as front-runners in the push to end discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. We cannot allow ourselves and our laws to be dictated by hateful, archaic, and small-minded individuals who wish to control others with their fear of change and evolution.

Sincerely,
