U.S. Must Rejoin Paris Climate Agreement

Target: President Donald Trump

Goal: Reverse America’s dangerous stance on climate change by accepting the Paris climate deal, rather than remaining the only country in the world excluded from it.

The United States is now the only country in the world refusing to sign on to the Paris climate deal as Syria seeks to join in the agreement. The U.S. is the world’s worst emitter of carbon dioxide after China, and yet President Trump refuses to work with every other country to protect the future of our planet—a position that was just reaffirmed by a representative, who stated that America will still withdraw unless the agreement’s terms are altered to be “more favorable to the American people.”

However, nothing about the situation as it currently stands is favorable to the American people. President Trump will be excluded from the upcoming climate change summit “for the time being,” as the Elysee Palace press office stated that preference is given first to countries who are actively engaged in climate change, and only after that will a chosen U.S. representative be invited. And, as former president Barack Obama stated, “The nations that remain in the Paris Agreement will be the nations that reap the benefits in jobs and industries created.”

Syria and Nicaragua, the last two hold-out countries apart from the U.S., have both joined the deal. Syria, the most recent member of the climate change agreement, approved its ratification in a vote by the Syria People’s Assembly. The country was not represented at the initial negotiations, when most of the world signed on, due to civil war. Nicaragua did not sign on at first because it saw the deal’s measures as “insufficient” in addressing the problem of climate change, but has since joined the accorded and stated that it is “the only instrument we have in the world that allows us to unify intentions and efforts to face climate change and natural disasters.” Sign below to demand that the United States join forces with every other county in the world to combat climate change, and sign on to the Paris climate agreement.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Trump,

The Paris climate agreement is a vital and irreplaceable measure worldwide in the best interest of our planet and future generations. It is irresponsible and dangerous for the U.S., the second largest emitter of carbon dioxide in the world and an influential power across the globe, to remain the only country that is not a part of this agreement.

Apart from the dangers to our environment of ignoring climate change, it is also not beneficial to the American people to be excluded from the climate deal. Our place at the table when it comes to discussions and negotiations is now at risk. Additionally, the benefits seen by the climate agreement in terms of jobs and industries will be denied to the American people. Now that the U.S. is the only country left not on board, there is no leverage left. I urge you to rejoin the Paris climate deal and protect our country, our world, and our future.

Sincerely,
