Success: No Charges for Protester Who Laughed at Attorney General

Target: Jessie K. Liu, U.S. Attorney, District of Columbia

Goal: Thank federal prosecutor for dropping charges against a protester who laughed during the current Attorney General’s confirmation hearings.

All charges against a protester who laughed during now-Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ confirmation hearing have been dropped, thanks in part to petitions like this one from ForceChange. The woman involved, Desiree Fairooz, was arrested back in January after she laughed following a comment that Sessions had a record of “treating all Americans equally under the law.” Her arrest and following trials were seen by many as being an infringement on her basic constitutional rights.

Fairooz was originally arrested after her laughter allegedly disrupted the congressional hearing. Many have disputed this fact, saying that she was no more disruptive than her fellow Code Pink organizers, and that her arrest was arbitrary and done vindictively. While it is shocking that it has taken nearly 10 months to drop these frivolous charges, it comes as a relief both for Fairooz and other protesters across the nation.

No one should have to face trial for the simple act of laughing at or criticizing a public official in a democratic system. Sign this petition to thank the prosecutor responsible for filing this motion and for upholding the fairness of our judicial system.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Liu,

It is a relief that Desiree Fairooz, the protester accused of having laughed at Attorney General Jeff Sessions during his confirmation hearing, will face no charges following your nolle prosequi filing. Fairooz’s arrest, trial and conviction was seen by many as being an embarrassment that compromised the core values that our country was founded on. That she will be able to go free without facing jail time or fines is justice well served.

I applaud you for protecting the First Amendment rights of protesters like Fairooz. There is no reason that she or anyone else should have to fear punishment for such a trivial act in any sort of democratic system.

Sincerely,

  1. Yes, everyone has a first Amendment right to be stupid and ignorant. Many of these protesters are using that right to the fullest.

  2. Jacqui Skill says:

Sessions does not treat all americans equal and is racist..I can understand how she would laugh at his absurd statement. It is insane that he has the position he does just as it is insane that Trump is president!

  3. 99.9% of petitions I sign on this site, but I just can’t get on this bandwagon. There comes a point where you have to show some dignity. If this behavior towards this administration was displayed across the board towards previous administrations, I would respect this, but it wasn’t, so I cant.

  4. Do you remember when President Obama was speaking, and a man called out, “You lie!”? Was any action taken?

  5. Kory Chatelain says:

Jeff Sessions is laughable. But being a racist and bigot is no laughing matter.

  6. Being rude is not good. America is not made of adults…just adults who act like children who have no boundaries and only know lies from media which they act on.
