Ensure Legal Protection for Same-Sex Couples

Target: Jennifer Simons, Chairwoman of Suriname’s National Assembly

Goal: Enact legal protections that guarantee equality for same-sex couples.

Same-sex couples in Suriname are not granted legal protection by the nation’s government. Despite living together, even for several decades, the government refuses to grant personal and financial protections that heterosexual married couples are promised.

Why does the government refuse to grant protections to same-sex couples? It fears its citizens “are not ready” for such changes. However, human rights should never depend on the comfort or readiness of others. They must be universal.

Sign the petition and demand that the government of Suriname outlaw discrimination against LGBTQ couples. Demand these couples be privy to the same rights as others. No more should the law legalize discrimination, bullying, and inequality.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chairwoman Simons,

In your nation, LGBTQ couples are not granted the same rights as heterosexual couples. Despite living together as a family, these couples are not legally recognized as a family.

Fellow government officials argue that citizens of Suriname “are not ready” for such a change. However, human rights must be equal for all, not depend on the comfort of a few. I demand that your government work to ensure equal treatment and protection for LGBTQ couples in your nation.

Sincerely,
