Demand Wilbur Ross Resign

Target: Wilbur L. Ross Jr., U.S. Commerce Secretary

Goal: Resign from your post as Secretary of Commerce.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur L. Ross Jr. is making millions of dollars off a business deal involving a Russian oligarch subject to U.S. sanctions, according to a report from the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. “Ross, a billionaire private equity investor, divested most of his business assets before joining President Donald Trump’s Cabinet in February, but he kept a stake in the shipping firm, Navigator Holdings Ltd.,” the consortium reported.

According to their investigation, one of Navigator’s largest customers is the Russian energy firm Subir, which is partially owned by Kirill Shamalov, who is married to Putin’s youngest daughter, and Gennady Timchenko, the sanctioned oligarch whose activities in the energy sector, the Treasury Department said, were “directly linked to Putin.” Meanwhile, Subir’s largest shareholder is allegedly Leonid Mikhelson, who also happens to run another energy company subject to U.S. sanctions.

Ross has defended himself by claiming he never had any role in discussions between Navigator and Subir, and argued that for him, it was all just “a normal commercial relationship and one that I had nothing to do with the creation of, and do not know the shareholders who were apparently sanctioned at some later point in time.”

However, if you think the Secretary of Commerce shouldn’t be quietly doing business involving Russian oligarchs, sign this petition to demand he resign.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary Ross,

The job description of the Secretary of Commerce is to promote U.S. industry both at home and abroad. The job isn’t about making money on deals involving sanctioned Russian oligarchs. Revelations of your business ties to Navigator and Subir have prompted allegations you may have a conflict of interest between your Russian business links and your role as Secretary of Commerce.

You argue there’s nothing untoward about your relationships with Navigator and Subir. While this may be true, it’s already clear the public doesn’t believe the Secretary of Commerce should have anything to do with sanctioned Russian oligarchs. That’s why we’re demanding you resign immediately, and pave the way for a Secretary of Commerce that the public will have faith in.

Sincerely,
