Tanzania: Stop Silencing the Free Press

Target: Prof. Paramagamba Kabudi, Ministry of Justice and Constitution Affairs, Tanzania

Goal: Stop shutting down newspapers and silencing the free press.

Officials in Tanzania have shut down four newspapers in just as many months. These newspapers, the nation’s government warns, are “undermining democracy.” However, Tanzania is abusing the rights of the free press.

Tens of thousands of people in the country rely on the four banned papers for their news. Print papers aren’t the only media outlets banned, however. Radio stations are also being silenced, ensuring fair and diverse news coverage isn’t accessible to citizens.

The press is the only means of holding a government accountable. Sign the petition and demand that the government of Tanzania stop silencing the free press. Demand that the media outlets closed be allowed to reopen.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Professor Kabudi,

Four newspapers have been forcibly closed in your nation since the summer. Tens of thousands of your citizens are now without accessible news sources, while journalists are being forced to censor themselves out of fear of losing their jobs.

Silencing the free press and shutting down media outlets goes against international laws of freedom of speech and press. By silencing the media in your nation, you’re robbing your citizens of differing viewpoints, expanded knowledge, and stimulating conversation and debate. A government that has nothing to hide doesn’t silence the press. I demand that you end your ban on the free press.

Sincerely,
