Applaud Evergreen State College for Equal Treatment of Transgendered Students

Target: Thomas L. Purce, President of Evergreen State College

Goal: Applaud college policy which allows transgendered students to use the facilities for the gender they identify with

Recently, Evergreen State College in Washington implemented a policy to allow a transgendered student identifying as female to enter the female locker rooms for the college’s pool. The student currently has male genitalia, but she identifies as female and should be allowed to use the facilities for the gender she identifies with. Evergreen College has made a tremendous step towards equality for transgendered individuals by implementing this policy.

This policy has caused controversy. Many people have complained about an individual with male genitalia in the female locker rooms. Evergreen College responded to the criticism by installing privacy curtains in the locker rooms. They also released a statement confirming that the policy will stay in place. Transgendered individuals at the college will continue to be able to use the facilities of the gender they identify with.

Transgendered people often face discrimination because of their gender identity. Washington state law forbids this type of discrimination, yet people still face it every day. Evergreen College’s policy enforces the law and gives equal rights to transgendered people. This policy is a step forward for equality, and it is a move that should be commended.

Dear Mr. Purce,

Recently, your college implemented a policy that allows a transgendered student who identifies as female into the female locker rooms for the pool. Even when this policy was faced with criticism, you continued to enforce it by installing privacy curtains in the locker rooms. This policy is a step forward for equality for transgendered individuals.

I applaud you for implementing and enforcing this policy. Transgendered people have often faced discrimination due to their gender identity. This policy enforces Washington state law which forbids this discrimination. You are supporting the rights of transgendered people, and this is a move for which I thank you.
