Don’t Allow New Uranium Mines Near the Grand Canyon

Target: Sonny Perdue, United States Secretary of Agriculture

Goal: Do not lift a ban on new uranium mining near the Grand Canyon.

The Trump administration has announced its recommendation to build new uranium mines on public land just outside the Grand Canyon, one of America’s priceless landmarks renowned for its natural beauty. If they are able to lift an Obama-era ban on new mining in the region, the health of many innocent people and wildlife will likely be put at risk.

Uranium mining is known to cause widespread air and watershed pollution that is harmful to human and animal health. For example, radioactive gases that form when uranium breaks down are considered to be a likely cause of lung cancer. If the existing ban on new mining is lifted, members of local tribal groups like the Havasupai, who have already suffered as the result of mining activities in the area, will likely be disproportionately affected. The land is currently managed by both the United States Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management.

There is no amount of profit to be gained that can justify an all-out assault on the environment and human rights. Sign this petition to demand that no new uranium mines be built near the Grand Canyon or its watershed.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary Perdue,

I am writing to you to urge you to revoke your recommendation to open up the area near the Grand Canyon for new uranium mining and exploration. Any new mining will contaminate the air and water supply that thousands of people and countless animals rely on, and will likely cause them immeasurable harm. Tribal groups in particular, like the Havasupai, will be disproportionately affected. They have had no say in this matter, and to expose them to further harm is unfair and shameful.

The Grand Canyon is one of our nation’s best loved natural icons. Its watershed is crucial for both the region’s ecology and its economy. Future generations should not have to pay the price for such shortsighted recommendations, therefore I urge you not to support the construction of any new uranium mines.

Sincerely,
