Punish Lawyer for Normalizing Rape Culture

Target: Sherif Ismail, Prime Minister of Egypt

Goal: Punish lawyer for sexist, rape-normalizing remarks on the air.

Prominent conservative Egyptian lawyer Nabih al-Wahsh said, on live satellite TV, that it was “a national duty” to rape a woman wearing ripped jeans. The comments were made during a debate for a draft law regarding prostitution; Wahsh claimed that any woman who walked down the street showing certain parts of her body was inviting harassment and assault, sparking an outcry from the audience and leading to a complaint filed against him to the Supreme Council for Media Regulation.

This man’s comments are beyond horrifying, a classic example of rape culture at work. It is above and beyond the typical ‘She asked for it’ defense used by rapists, a claim that it somehow benefits one’s country to sexually harass and assault a woman for showing any bits of skin below her forehead and above her ankles. This man stood firmly by his disgusting beliefs on live TV, while discussing laws with a woman no less.

We cannot simply let him get away with his sickening comments. Wahsh espouses views that are a direct violation of human rights and dignities, which should never be acceptable or legal. He must be made to apologize publicly for his remarks, and punished as severely as possible. Sign this petition to demand this man face the consequences of his words and behavior.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Prime Minister Ismail,

A lawyer recently said, on live satellite TV, that it was “a national duty” to sexually harass and rape a woman wearing ripped jeans. His reasoning was that any woman who walked around showing “half of her behind” was inviting such attention; this was said during a debate with a woman regarding prostitution laws. So far, the only action taken against this man has been a complaint filed to the Supreme Council for Media Regulation.

Nahbi al-Wahsh deserves far more than that for comments that all but normalize rape culture and sexual harassment. This goes beyond cultural differences in views regarding women and sex; such beliefs are a violation of human rights and dignities. Wahsh needs to be severely punished and made to apologize for his disgusting remarks immediately, and banned from the airwaves.

Sincerely,
