Applaud Largest-Ever Tropical Forest Restoration

Target: M. Sanjayan, CEO of Conservation International

Goal: Praise Conservation International for their plan to restore 70,000 acres of forest in Brazil

Conservation International is getting ready to implement the largest reforestation project in history. Seventy-three million trees will be planted using a newly developed planting technique which results in greater biodiversity than traditional methods. Over the past 40 years, 20 percent of the Amazon Rainforest has been destroyed. M. Sanjayan, the CEO of Conservation International, hopes to undo some of this damage, turning 70,000 acres that had been cleared for pastureland back into rainforest.

The health of the Amazon is important for the health of our entire planet. Forests, especially tropical ones, remove carbon from the atmosphere and store it. This process, called carbon sequestration, helps to offset emissions from fossil fuels and slows down climate change. Ecologists estimate that the Amazon rainforest absorbs 430 million tons of carbon every year. Restoring forests and reducing greenhouse gas emissions are two of the best ways we can prevent global warming.

Reforestation is also essential for preserving biodiversity. The Amazon Rainforest is one of the most diverse ecosystems on earth: it is estimated that ten percent of all species are earth are found in the Amazon. Lastly, this project will have important benefits for the local economy as well. Conservation International has worked closely with indigenous communities and local farmers to coordinate the reforesting effort, showing that it is possible to create jobs and restore the environment at the same time.

To launch this project, Conservation International is collaborating with the Global Environment Facility, the World Bank, the Brazilian Ministry of Environment, the Brazilian Biodiversity Fund, and Amazonia Live. Dear Mr. Sanjayan,

I am writing to thank you for your efforts to restore the Amazon Rainforest. This project is valuable not only for the trees it will plant, but also for the information that it will generate about the most effective ways to reforest large swaths of land. This is an incredible step towards Brazil’s goal of reforesting 12 million hectares of land by 2030.

We applaud you not only for your commitment to ecological conservation, but also for your respect and concern for local communities. Your efforts to restore the rainforest while also making sure that local people are able to maintain their livelihoods is truly a source of inspiration. We hope that others will follow in your footsteps and take the necessary measures preserve our planet for future generations.
