Save Whales from Becoming Entangled in Fishing Gear

Target: Charlton H. Bonham, Director of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife

Goal: Don’t allow commercial fishermen to use dangerously long crabbing lines or fish in areas where whales migrate.

There have been over 30 reports of whales becoming entangled in fishing lines off the West Coast of the United States this year. The majority of these cases have taken place off the coast of California, and many involve long crabbing lines used in commercial Dungeness crab fisheries. In some cases, the whales are able to break free, while others tragically drown or are forced to drag the heavy fishing equipment behind them.

The main reason whales get caught is the fact that extremely long lines are used to connect crab pots to the water’s surface. When there is slack in the lines, the whales can get entangled as they swim through, especially when they are following migratory routes. The best way to protect these whales is to keep the crab pots out of areas whales are known to frequent, and to call for laws banning the use of overly long crabbing lines.

Whales have suffered tremendously due to human actions and environmental change. We must do what we can to ensure that they will have a future in our oceans. Sign this petition and demand that measures be taken to protect whales and other sea life from dangerous fishing equipment.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director Bonham,

I’m writing you to urge that you do more to protect the endangered whales that swim off of California’s shores. Many of these innocent creatures drown when they become entangled in crabbing lines used by the Dungeness crab industry, while others end up dragging the lines behind them, causing them distress and harm. We must take steps to keep these deadly lines away from the whales, and to make them safer for wildlife as a whole.

Crabbing lines are most dangerous to whales when they have slack or are placed in areas whales frequent, such as migratory areas. Therefore, I urge you to call for laws that would shorten these lines and to not issue permits for fisheries in areas where whales are known to migrate. Please do what you can to prevent more whales from dying or suffering as a result of commercial fishing.

Sincerely,
