Save Sacred Public Lands From Trump Administration

Target: Donald Trump, President of the United States

Goal: Denounce Donald Trump’s decision to shrink culturally important national monuments.

It has been announced that Donald Trump will shrink two national monuments in Utah. Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments encompass more than 3.6 million acres and are of great ecological and historical value. Trump’s decision will open parts of these monuments to drilling and mining, despoiling these beautiful natural monuments.

These areas were designated as national monuments for their outstanding natural beauty and significant cultural importance. Bears Ears contains thousands of important ancient archaeological sites and cultural artifacts. Several Native American tribes, including the Navajo Nation, Hopi Nation, and Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, are deeply connected to this land. Grand Staircase-Escalante is also an important paleontological site: two dozen new species of dinosaurs have been discovered there.

The decision to shrink these national monuments was likely influenced by oil lobbying groups like the American Petroleum Institute, which have been trying to open these two monuments to drilling for years. From pulling out of the Paris Climate Agreement, to repealing Obama’s Clean Power Plan, to reversing the ban on the sale of plastic bottles in National Parks, Trump has shown that he cares more about corporate interests than preserving our planet for future generations.

Trump’s decision has gained strong opposition from environmental groups, scientists, and Native Americans. Representatives of the Navajo Nation have said that reducing these monuments would constitute a violation of the Antiquities Act of 1906 and that they plan to file suit against the Trump Administration. Sign this petition to support these groups in protecting our public lands and denounce the destruction of these valuable national monuments.

Dear President Trump,

I am writing to urge you to reconsider your decision to shrink Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments. These monuments have important historical value and are of massive cultural importance to many Native American groups. Furthermore, shrinking these monuments would be devastating to the local tourism industry.

Your actions are an insult to the memory of President Roosevelt, who designated 230 million acres of public lands for protection. Roosevelt wrote that, “Of all the questions which can come before this nation…there is none which compares in importance with the great central task of leaving this land even a better land for our descendants than it is for us.”

Your lack of concern for environmental issues is utterly alarming. You must take steps to preserve our nation’s natural and historical sites so that they may be enjoyed by future generations. Show us that you care about America’s citizens and not just its corporations by reversing your decision to shrink national monuments.

Is there no end to the mendacious greed and corruption running rampant in this administration ? Our precious pristine wildernesses are being auctioned off to corporations whose only interest is voracious profit and vested interests. What do those degraded jackals care about our sacred lands…. must be stopped before irreversible damage is done to our environment. This is a national disgrace.

  5. This administration is probably the worst in recent history, I mean all of US history.

  7. Please respect our history!
