Ban Rubbernecking at Crime Scenes

Target: Robert Casey, Pennsylvania Senator

Goal: Ban onlookers from taking selfies and candids of people in crisis.

A Pittsburgh woman was beaten senseless and knocked out cold on the streets, with a crowd of onlookers taking pictures and no one calling 911. Several people, including children, even took selfies next to her unconscious body, and one even reportedly took her phone away.

This is disgusting. While the taking of photos can be useful as evidence for the police, this was clearly not the case. The incident has been compared to gawkers in a circus sideshow, rubberneckers stopping to gawk and jeer at a human being in peril. The victim was reportedly a drug addict who had been arrested several times, which may have been used as a justification by her attackers and the onlookers when in truth, it is no excuse for such behavior. The woman was finally rescued and taken to rehab, but the damage by the insensitive onlookers has been done.

It should be required by law for witnesses of a crime to call the police, but that is only half of the solution. The taking of candids and selfies by rubberneckers is insensitive and cruel and must not be allowed; this particular woman was rescued, but if nothing is done to stop such selfish actions, something like this will happen again. Sign this petition to demand a ban on the taking of candids and selfies centered around victims in crisis.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Senator Casey,

A crowd of onlookers took candid photos and selfies as a woman was beaten senseless and knocked out cold on the streets. She was eventually rescued, but not before her phone was taken away and none of the crowd bothered to call 911. The victim was reportedly a drug addict in need of medical and professional help.

It is selfish, insensitive, and cruel for people to stand and gawk at a helpless victim like a circus sideshow act, but this trend of rubbernecking is unfortunately all too common in today’s society. While this woman was rescued, there is no telling how many times this has happened or how many more times it will. You must enact a law against the taking of candids and selfies at the scene of a crime, with violators being fined and arrested. Furthermore, the law should require at least one witness in a crowd witnessing a crime to report it. We must prevent incidents such as this one from happening again.

Sincerely,
