Applaud Victoria for Banning Plastic Bags

Target: Daniel Andrews, Premier of Victoria

Goal: Praise the government of Victoria, Australia for banning single-use plastic bags.

Victoria, Australia’s second most populous state, has become the most recent state to ban single-use plastic bags. These bags are already banned in several other states and territories, including South Australia, Tasmania, the Northern Territory, and the Australian Capital Territory.

Worldwide, as many as 1 trillion plastic bags are used each year. These plastic bags require millions of barrels of oil to create. Even worse, these plastic bags all too often make their way into the ocean, where they pose a significant danger to marine animals. The amount of plastic in the world’s oceans is truly astonishing: scientists estimate that as much as 30 billion pounds of plastic may be contaminating the ocean. Each year, millions of marine animals, including sea turtles, whales, and seabirds, are killed when they eat or become tangled in ocean plastic. Even after plastic bags break down, plastic microparticles may harm fish and corals.

Plastic bags are banned in several Australian states and many countries, including Kenya, Italy, France, and Bangladesh. We hope that major plastic bag consumers like the United States and Indonesia will soon follow suit and attempt to reduce the amount of plastic waste they generate. Furthermore, we hope that plastic bag bans will spark a larger global discussion about reducing the use of plastic packaging and plastic microbeads, which also have devastating effects on ocean life. Sign the petition below to thank the government of Victoria for taking this important step to reduce plastic pollution.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Premier Andrews,

I am writing to celebrate your state’s recent decision to ban single-use plastic bags. Plastic pollution is one of the biggest threats to the ocean ecosystems, and plastic bags are especially deadly for sea turtles and marine birds. In Australia alone, as many as 15,000 sea turtles may be killed in a single year by becoming entangled in plastic pollution.

Your plastic bag ban will undoubtedly aid in the conservation of some of Australia’s most important marine animals, including Australian fur seals, southern right whales, and fairy penguins. We thank you and your government for taking concrete steps to protect our oceans. We hope that others will be inspired by your example and reduce their use of plastic.

Sincerely,
