Haribo: End Any Alleged Slave Labor

Target: Hans-Guido Riegel, CEO of Haribo

Goal: Ensure allegations of slavery in Haribo’s supply chain are investigated, and ensure all ingredients are ethically sourced.

One of the world’s largest confectionery companies has been accused of sourcing one of its key ingredients from suppliers relying on slave labor.

Haribo, the maker of popular sweets like gummy bears, was recently put under the spotlight by German broadcaster ARD. In a documentary titled “Markencheck,” ARD’s investigators allegedly found Haribo sourced its carnauba wax from Brazilian farms accused of forcing workers to labor under poor conditions for little pay. Carnauba is a key ingredient in sweets like gummy bears, and gives them a glossy finish while stopping them from sticking together in the packet.

According to “Markencheck,” Haribo’s suppliers pay their workers as little as $12 a day to work long hours, with little to no access to clean drinking water or bathrooms. The workers are allegedly left to sleep outside or in vehicles. These reported conditions have been described as horrific even by Brazilian standards. According to the investigation, Brazilian authorities occasionally raid such plantations to free workers from conditions that have been compared to slavery.

So far, Haribo has vowed to investigate the allegations. Sign this petition to demand they do so, and ensure their supply chain is clean of such alleged abuses.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Riegel,

A recent ARD investigation uncovered allegations of horrific labor conditions in Haribo’s supply chain. The investigation allegedly found Brazilian workers on carnauba wax plantations forced to endure long hours for little pay, with little to no access to basic necessities like clean drinking water or bathrooms.

So far, your company has vowed to investigate these allegations and take them seriously. While this is welcome news, we demand actions – not just words. We call on you to ensure Haribo’s supply chain relies exclusively on ethically-sourced ingredients.

Sincerely,
