Protect Journalists from Brutal Murders

Target: Ravi Shankar Prasad, Minister of Law and Justice, India

Goal: Protect the rights and lives of journalists threatened by extremists in India.

Journalists in India, the world’s most populated democracy, are being brutally murdered, while the Indian government does nothing to protect these reporters, their rights, or their lives. In a little less than a month, two prominent journalists have been killed, and no suspects have been named by police.

Reporter Gauri Lankesh was shot and killed outside her home, and television reporter Santanu Bhowmik was kidnapped and killed. Both reporters were critical of the nation’s ruling party.

India, as the world’s largest democracy, must protect the press and their freedom of speech. Reporters should not fear for their lives while simply voicing their opinions and sharing their voices with fellow citizens. Sign the petition and demand that the government of India do more to protect reporters and hold their attackers responsible.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Minister Prasad,

Reporters in your nation are being murdered, and suspects have yet to be identified, despite over a month passing since the murder of both Gauri Lankesh and Santanu Bhowmik. This is a troubling trend.

As the world’s largest democracy, India has a responsibility to protect reporters and freedom of speech. Without doing so, India cannot truly call itself a democracy. I demand more be done to protect the lives of journalists.

Sincerely,

  2. Gov’t ain’t gonna do a damn thang about it if, as likely they played a part in it inna 1st place.

  3. A free press is essential to democracy, stop this non – sense. We should have a free press everywhere.

  4. The Modi government’s encouragement of hindu nationalism is responsible for the creation of extremists who attack all those who have different views and this does not bode well for the image of India.

  5. True journalists report what is unfair and corrupt in defiance of pressure from state power, which often results in their assassination. Yes, being “good” journalists is among the most courageous and dangerous professions. Without them, we wouldn’t know even a glimpse of truth about what’s happening in the world.

  6. I always thought that India was democratic country?
These killings point to only one issue: governments are afraid that their actions become public.
