Free Ukrainian Filmmaker Imprisoned in Russia

Target: Vladimir Putin, President of Russia

Goal: Release filmmaker Oleg Sentsov.

Russian punk band Pussy Riot recently drew renewed attention to the plight of one of Ukraine’s most well known political dissidents. During a protest in Trump Tower, the band dropped a banner reading, “Free Sentsov,” referring to Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov.

Senstov is currently serving a 20-year sentence in a Russian prison, after being convicted on terrorism charges. He was arrested in Russian-controlled Crimea in 2014, and accused of plotting to bomb bridges and other public infrastructure. Senstov later confessed to the allegations, though his lawyers say he only did so after being tortured.

Human rights groups including Amnesty International have likewise dismissed the allegations against Sentsov as bogus, and instead argue he was targeted for his criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Sentsov has openly opposed Russia’s annexation of Crimea, and delivered food to Ukrainian soldiers trapped in bases in Crimea.

If you believe Sentsov should be free, sign this petition demanding Putin release him.

Dear President Putin,

Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov says he has committed no crime, and is instead behind bars merely for criticizing you and your annexation of Crimea. His lawyer has argued Sentsov was forced to confess to a bogus terror plot while in Russian custody, after being subjected to torture and threats of sexual abuse. Human rights groups largely agree, with organizations such as Amnesty International dismissing Sentsov’s case as a politically motivated show trial.

Nobody should be imprisoned due to their political beliefs alone, and we demand you release Sentsov.
