ESPN: Apologize for Suspending Black Journalist for Speaking Her Mind

Target: John Skipper, President of ESPN

Goal: Demand ESPN apologize to show host for censorship.

“SportsCenter” host Jemele Hill was punished by ESPN for daring to speak her mind. Hill protested Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’s threatening to bench players who protested police brutality and rightfully called President Trump a white supremacist; Trump’s regime and several pro-Trump NFL owners demanded the network silence her, and they did just that by suspending her for two weeks.

This is beyond disgusting. The network essentially made an example of Hill, an African-American woman, in order to appease racist sports fans. This is not only silencing free speech, but it is normalizing white supremacy. Jones desires to keep African-American football players “in their place” by silencing them with threats, and Trump has called the players protesting racial injustice “sons of bitches.” By siding with these men, ESPN is essentially sending the message that racism is okay.

Hill was recently reinstated, but the actions against her must not be swept under the rug. Sign this petition to demand ESPN publicly apologize to her and protect her First Amendment rights.

Dear Mr. Skipper,

Your suspension of “SportsCenter” host Jemele Hill at the demands of Jerry Jones and the Trump administration was unfair and unethical. Jones is a known racist who desires to keep African-American players “in their place” by silencing them, and President Trump has repeatedly praised neo-Nazis and white supremacists. By caving to their demands, you are normalizing racism at the cost of free speech, particularly that of a woman of color.

Simply reinstating Hill is not enough. You must apologize to her, publicly, for silencing her. Hill’s criticisms of Jones and Trump were warranted, as she was speaking the truth about their behavior and their actions. These things need to be addressed in this day and age. Do not side with the bigots and the supremacists. Protect Hill’s right to free speech and apologize to her for failing to do so in the past.
