Success: China Shuts Down Polluting Factories

Target: Xi Jinping, President of China

Goal: Support China’s efforts to drastically reduce industrial pollution.

In recent years, China has implemented and enforced strict environmental protection laws. In 2016 alone, Beijing imposed over $20 million of fines for breaking these laws. Officials in more than 80,000 factories have been cited for environmental infractions and hundreds have been charged with criminal offenses. Factories have been shut down until they comply with the current laws.

Thanks to the Chinese government, international collaborations, groups like the Clean Air Alliance of China, and petitions like this one at ForceChange, China will hopefully see improvements in air quality in the near future. Industrial pollution cuts will continue: 28 cities in northern China have pledged to reduce air pollution by at least 15 percent this winter. In addition to curbing industrial pollution, China is reducing its use of coal and expanding the use of renewable energy: China is currently the world’s leading solar energy producer.

China is home to approximately 20 percent of the world’s population and dozens of endangered animals. These efforts to reduce air and water pollution are critical for the health of China’s people and environment. As President Xi Jinping has said, “Clear waters and lush mountains are as valuable as gold and silver.” Sign below to support this incredibly important push for environmental protection in China.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Xi Jinping,

Thank you for imposing strict punishments for those who break China’s environmental protection laws. This will undoubtedly improve the quality of China’s water and air and have immense benefits for the health of China’s people.

Industrial pollution is a major environmental problem worldwide, contributing to global warming, negatively affecting biodiversity, and significantly contributing to human heart and lung disease. China’s crackdown on industrial pollution will have global ramifications. We thank you for your action and hope that other countries will follow your lead in reducing industrial pollution.

Sincerely,
