Demand That Bahrain Reinstate Its Freedom of Speech and Assembly

Target: Sheikh Rashid bin Abdullah al-Khalifa, Interior Minister of Bahrain

Goal: Reinstate the right for Bahrain citizens to protest and assemble

The Interior Ministry of the kingdom of Bahrain has banned public demonstration and protests. The government of the small Middle Eastern kingdom claims that protestors have violated several conditions of their right to protest, and the violence that has happened as a result of these protests poses too great a risk to allow them to continue.

The protests were focused on the tyranny of Bahrain’s Sunni monarchy. Since the start of Arab Spring, many citizens of Bahrain have risen up and challenged the monarchy of the kingdom, claiming it has been oppressive. Many citizens of Bahrain say that the crackdown on protests is not due to violence but efforts to silence dissenting opinions. In previous weeks, the government of Bahrain had arrested individuals for posts made on social media sites.

Freedom of speech is not conditional. If rights were subject to governmental discretion, they would not be rights but merely conveniences. However, freedom of speech is not a convenience; it is necessary in maintaining a free society. A government stopping the rights of its people to assemble and protest cannot be tolerated.

Sign the below petition letter, and stand-up for human rights everywhere. People have the right to voice their opinions about their government without fear of being arrested. Bahrain must reinstate the rights of its people.

Dear Minister Sheikh Rashid bin Abdullah al-Khalifa,

Your country’s government has recently banned public demonstration and protests. You claim this is due to the escalation of violence that has occurred as a result of the protests. Unfortunately, the majority of your people claim otherwise.

This recent move to limit freedom of speech appears to be an attempt to silence the voices that oppose the rule of your government. The recent prosecution of individuals who have posted dissenting remarks on social media sites seems to also line up with that belief.

You must reinstate the right to protest, assemble, and voice dissenting opinions. It cannot be a right if it is conditional on the whims of the government. The majority of modern countries have accepted that the right to protest, assemble, and free speech are the cornerstones of a just government.

Please reinstate these rights, and treat your citizens with the respect they deserve. Such important rights must be protected at all costs.
