Don’t Let Shelters Kill Pets Without a Waiting Period

Target: Aiken County Animal Shelter

Goal: Stop euthanizing healthy surrendered animals without any waiting period.

Two young, healthy dogs were unnecessarily put down a mere three hours after they arrived at the Aiken County Animal Shelter in South Carolina. The dogs, Tux and Bruiser, had been the beloved pets of the Blackwell family, but personal circumstances and two months of fruitless searching for someone to adopt the animals forced the Blackwell to surrender them to the shelter. Shortly before the shelter closed for the day, the Blackwells found somebody to adopt the dogs after all, but their phone call to the shelter went unanswered. When they returned for Tux and Bruiser in the morning, they had already been killed.

The shelter categorizes animals as lost unidentified, lost with identification, or surrendered. Its current policy requires at least two weeks before an animal who was lost with identification can be euthanized, and at least five days if the animal is lost unidentified.  Without any minimum wait period for a surrendered pet, that pet’s life can be ended immediately simply because of the way they arrived at the shelter, like Tux and Bruiser. Sign below to demand that these animals’ lives be given just as much consideration as any other, and the unjust policies regarding euthanasia be changed.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Aiken County Animal Shelter,

The Aiken County Animal Shelter’s policies on considering euthanasia for surrendered pets must be altered to give these innocent animals the chance at life they deserve. Because euthanizing them becomes an immediate option as soon as they arrived, the lives of these pets can be unjustly disregarded simply because of the manner in which they got there, even if they are young and healthy.

The Blackwell family and their two dogs, Tux and Bruiser, are a tragic example of the consequences of your shelter’s current policy. Tux and Bruiser, neither over a year old, were euthanized less than three hours after arriving at the shelter, and when their family came for them the next day because they’d found new adoptive owners, their beloved pets were dead. I urge you not to let this continue, and to change your policies by requiring a wait period before euthanizing any animal at your shelter.

Sincerely,

  5. Cynthia Mattera says:

Shelters should give owners time to find their dogs. They should at least wait 30 days. This is so wrong ;(

  6. JUSTICE FOR TUX AND BRUISER THE DOGS BY MAKING A NEW LAW TO DEFEND THE GREAT SHELTER PETS BY GRANTING THEM MORE TIME TO FIND A RESCUE OR FAMILY NOW.
