Stop Imprisoning Elephants at Zoo After Bong Su the Elephant Euthanized

Target: Kevin Tanner, Director, Melbourne Zoo

Goal: End the captivity of elephants at the Melbourne Zoo.

An elephant that was held captive for 40 years at the Melbourne Zoo has died due to a degenerative foot and joint disease. Despite concerns that his living conditions were too cramped, the Asiatic bull elephant named Bong Su was forced to spend his days in a concrete exhibit for the purposes of allowing the public to gawk at him. The Melbourne Zoo has stated that Bong Su’s condition had deteriorated to the point that they had no other option but to euthanize him.

Elephant experts and zoo consultants say that Bong Su’s death was entirely preventable and that his arthritic condition was the result of his unnatural living circumstances. Bong Su first showed signs of arthritis in 2005, but concerned observers noted that the elephant had developed severe behavioral problems far earlier. It was known that Bong Su would turn in circles endlessly each night in his barn, walking through his own feces, as a result of his boredom and distress. This constant confined motion may have led to his debilitating condition.

Elephants are intelligent, social creatures that do not do well in captivity, and it is time that they are removed from all zoo exhibits. Sign this petition to demand that the Melbourne Zoo put an end to their elephant program and transfer all remaining elephants to a wildlife sanctuary so they can live out the rest of their lives with the dignity and space they need.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Tanner,

The untimely death of an elephant kept at your zoo named Bong Su was a preventable tragedy. He had shown signs of distress for years as a result of his inadequate living conditions, as shown by his repetitive pacing that could have led to his crippling arthritis. This behavior shows that Bong Su was depressed, bored and stressed as a result of being forced into a cramped and unnatural living environment.

Elephants cannot be humanely kept in zoos, as they require far more space and opportunities for social interaction with their own kind than captive conditions can realistically provide. That is why I am calling on you to put an end to your zoo’s elephant program and ensure that all remaining elephants are transferred to a more humane wildlife sanctuary.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

Zoos should be banned worldwide, sanctuaries only, for animals that can’t be in the wild. Put cameras up and have virtual zoos only!!!

Denise, Agree with you 100%. I can’t wait to see these heartless money hungry people get out of business for good!!

  3. Nooshin Perla says:

We do NOT need zoo or circus!! We need to CLOSE these all together for good!! People who want to go to circus, they can use their own kind. Animals are NOT here for people to have fun with! They are God’d creatures and have all the right to be free and live their life the way they want. PLESE stop cruelty to these magnificent being!!!

  4. Zoos and circuses should be banned. Wild animals belong in the wild or if absolutely nesessary in a good sanctuary.

  5. Barton Dixon says:

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” Mahatma Gandhi

    • That is exactly what he said….and the poor animals in these Asian countries as well as the UK and Australia….how do these people sleep at night with bullying and abuse on their hands….

  6. Jaime Perez says:

What a terrible tragedy. This could have been prevented by not putting Bong Su in a cage for most of his life. He should have been left alone and in the wild.

  7. I expect better than this from zoos in Australia. I thought the article was going to be about some zoo in Asia but was horrified to see in was Melbourne. Shame on you Kevin Tanner and shame on you Melbourne Zoo.

  8. When will human learn to LOVE AND RESPECT GOD’S CREATIONS!! MOTHER NATURE IS DYING, ANIMALS ARE BEING BULLY,ABUSE,TORTURE N KILL FOR TROPHY STUPID FAME N MOST DISGUSTING THING IS TO EAT THEM ALL!!! HOW SINFUL N BLOODY INDEED!! PLS HAVE MORE LOVES FOR ANY KIND OF ALL ANIMALS N RESPECT THEM TOO, AS THEY HAVE FEELINGS N THEIR OWN FAMILY JUST LIKE US HUMAN KIND! TRULY SICK OF SELFISH HUMAN BEINGS N SAD FOR ALL THE LOVELY INNOCENT LOYAL ANIMALS! GOD SEES N WATCHING! GOD BLESS ALL THE ANIMALS.
PLS SET THEM FREE!! ITS THEIR RIGHTS TO BE IN THEIR OWN SANTUARY !! TQ

  9. Elephants DO NOT BELONG IN ZOOS (CIRCUSES, or ANY other confined area.
These extremely intelligent and social animals belong with others of their species, with plenty of space to roam and be free.
Any animal that paces back and forth, moves in circles, bobs up and down, sleeps too much, etc. is showing signs of stress, boredom, loneliness and depression.

The elephant Bong Su experienced a torturous unnatural life, demonstrating negative symptoms for years. Had he been transferred to a reputable sanctuary with other elephants (as the rest of the Melbourne Zoo’s pachyderms should be), he, most likely, would have lived a much longer, happier and healthier existence.

It was very cruel to keep him there, for 40 miserable years) with painful arthritis! Don’t allow the remainder elephants to suffer so sadly as he did!!

Show some respect, decency and compassion for these wonderful majestic creatures!

  10. Denise Devereux says:

You are Guilty of submitting this poor elephant to an unnatural environment and inadequate space for it to exercise and enjoy its life. God the Human Race Disgusts Me. Visiting the Zoo is not pleasurable as it often brings tears to my eyes when I see how many of the animals are poorly housed and pace up and down in their cages. SHAME ON YOU. YOU SHOULD KNOW BETTER.
Any spare land you had in the zoo grounds you made into picnic areas. Who is the IDIOT DICK that decided this. So much area outside to picnic. Don’t need to go to the zoo to picnic. You want to make Money get your lazy staff to contact corporates / fundraise to buy more land around the zoo or get the Government to buy it on behalf of the taxpayers of this country.
WHAT A BIG MONEY EARNER TO HAVE AN OPEN RANGE ZOO / SANCTUARY SO CLOSE TO THE CITY CENTRE. IT COULD BE LIKE NO OTHER IN THE WORLD.
$$$$ for the Zoo and Government with Tourist Influx and a much better environment for all the animals.

    • Denise Devereux says:

My preference is of course for all animals to live naturally in the environment that God intended, however many of these animals are becoming extinct in their native countries due to poaching, trophy hunting etc. So if the only alternative is for Zoos then they MUST BE OPEN RANGE ZOO SANCTUARIES.

  11. Lisa Zarafonetis says:

    Signed & shared❗️?

  12. The Zoo Management should be all fired and all the animals sent to animal sanctuaries! Shame on you, stop imprisoning elephants and other animals!

  13. It is so sad to hear that yet another animal in a zoo has died this way.No animal should have to live like this. When will people learn zoos are not good for animals at all..

  14. i hope all the people that had something to do with this beautiful creature suffers from the same thing it has, no animal should ever be in a zoo, somewhere people want to look after them is so different, where they feel free even if they are not, but cared for, which all animals should have.

  15. How many animals will die in zoos & for the sake of what( Money )Zoos are outdated & vile prisions for animals doomed to die at the hands of imoral humans. They are disgusting places why are the still allowed. This death would be expected in Asia but Austrailia should hang there heads in shame. Personally I find this zoo horrific They are not fit to have any animal. CLOSE ALL ZOOS THEY ARE PRISON CAMPS OF DEATH.

  16. All zoos and circuses and road side shows should be banned. You are all guilty of animal abuse. Under the pretext of education for children. Read a book go online visit them in THEIR natural environment not in captivity. Money mongers these places are vile and dirty most of the animals are not treated properly.
You should all be ashamed this is Humanity at its worst.

  17. Alexandre Engelen says:

People of Australia, do you realize this happened in your country? Are you selfish people without feelings? This zoo should be closed just like other zoos in the world: animals must not be imprisoned, their place is in nature (we humans also love freedom). Sorry Bong Su, RIP !

  18. What elephants go through at zoos sickens me. Circuses with animal acts, state fairs, Las Vegas animal acts, even dog acts, etc.,should be banned worldwide. However, quality zoos are needed to keep endangered species going. In the US those that participate in federally supervised breeding are keeping species alive. If they pass rigorous animal welfare standards and ensure habitat that is as close as possible to what they would have in the wild, animals can be helped by human intervention. Captive breeding and artificial insemination are the only hope for some species because it is too late for many to make it in the wild. The only hope for polar bears is captive breeding with the HOPE of release generations down the road. For the foreseeable future, there is no other alternative especially since the American ass in the White House intends to make trophy hunting of Polar bears legal. The Aussies aren’t the only ones putting assholes in positions of power to destroy animals.

NOTHING will change until the idiots who pay to see animals in captivity stop doing it. One moron wrote to DISCOVER magazine that the end of Ringling Bros. circus went too far and was depriving children of seeing elephants and llamas… That mentality makes it profitable to abuse animals and it won’t stop until there is no profit.

  19. FOR ALL OF THESE INSANE AND INHUMANE BREED SOMEONE FORGOT MAIN THINGS IN HUMANES EDUCATION. WHO IS IT?
ALL THAT  BARBARIC  MUD AND RESPONSIBLE  NONPERSONS  ARE SENSELESS FOR ALL OTHER TERRESTRIALS – SUSPEND THEM OF ALL HUMAN ACHIEVEMENTS!
It is time hold all those responsible for authorizing and overseeing the implementation of torture against fellow EARTH inhabitants & creatures accountable. A special prosecutor is the most comprehensive way to do that.
THESE BARBARIC MUD DESERVES INCLUDED ALL PERSONS RESPONSIBLE THERE NOT TO LIVE WITHIN CIVILIZED SOCIETIES.
THE INHUMANE and BARBARIC ASSHOLE – STYLE HAS TO STOP!

  20. Greedy bastards, all people (if you can call them that) like tanner are interested in is getting rich and they don’t care who pays the price.

individuals who pay for any kind of entertainment at the expense of
defenseless animals are just as bad.
They should all be in jail and the outdated and unnecessary abuse of animals should be illegal.
