Stop Imprisoning Elephants at Zoo After Bong Su the Elephant Euthanized

Target: Kevin Tanner, Director, Melbourne Zoo

Goal: End the captivity of elephants at the Melbourne Zoo.

An elephant that was held captive for 40 years at the Melbourne Zoo has died due to a degenerative foot and joint disease. Despite concerns that his living conditions were too cramped, the Asiatic bull elephant named Bong Su was forced to spend his days in a concrete exhibit for the purposes of allowing the public to gawk at him. The Melbourne Zoo has stated that Bong Su’s condition had deteriorated to the point that they had no other option but to euthanize him.

Elephant experts and zoo consultants say that Bong Su’s death was entirely preventable and that his arthritic condition was the result of his unnatural living circumstances. Bong Su first showed signs of arthritis in 2005, but concerned observers noted that the elephant had developed severe behavioral problems far earlier. It was known that Bong Su would turn in circles endlessly each night in his barn, walking through his own feces, as a result of his boredom and distress. This constant confined motion may have led to his debilitating condition.

Elephants are intelligent, social creatures that do not do well in captivity, and it is time that they are removed from all zoo exhibits. Sign this petition to demand that the Melbourne Zoo put an end to their elephant program and transfer all remaining elephants to a wildlife sanctuary so they can live out the rest of their lives with the dignity and space they need.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Tanner,

The untimely death of an elephant kept at your zoo named Bong Su was a preventable tragedy. He had shown signs of distress for years as a result of his inadequate living conditions, as shown by his repetitive pacing that could have led to his crippling arthritis. This behavior shows that Bong Su was depressed, bored and stressed as a result of being forced into a cramped and unnatural living environment.

Elephants cannot be humanely kept in zoos, as they require far more space and opportunities for social interaction with their own kind than captive conditions can realistically provide. That is why I am calling on you to put an end to your zoo’s elephant program and ensure that all remaining elephants are transferred to a more humane wildlife sanctuary.

Sincerely,

  1. JUSTICE FOR BONG SU . BAN THE CAPTIVITY ON THE GREAT ANIMALS HERE NOW.

  2. Animals do NOT belong in a zoo. They are not to be abused or held captive. Animals deserve to be protected not held captive. Free all animals from any zoo.

  3. Giuseppe Coco says:

    free animals – go vegan

  4. Enough is Enough! Leave the Elephants Where They Belong Free!

  5. No more zoos!

  6. get these animals out of this hell hole and into a proper sanctuary with freedom

  7. Elephants are large social animals who need to live with large social groups in physically large appropriate environments. A cramped zoo is no place for these animals. Melbourne Zoo is simply not equipped to care for these animals and should transfer them to an appropriate sanctuary if the zoo is not able to come up with the funds to open its own pachyderm-appropriate large-scale sanctuary.

  8. Barbaric to keep elephants captive as the elephants are smarter than the barbarians keeping them to profit odd their backs

  9. Justice needs to be done for Bong Su so that he didn’t die in vain. No elephants souldbe in cramped zoo’s Transfer them now to an accredited sanctuary It’s now time to do the right thing and set them free Rgus zoo should alos be banned from havng any animal it cannot provide adequate living space, good areas to exerise and aboveall, the company of other elephants!

  10. Heather Brophy says:

Tanner, The time has come to stop the Cruelty and Greed, you are paid to Protect and Care if you can’t then get the Hell Out! Wildlife Sanctuary Now!

  11. Who need the zoos? This was an olden era & stone age when people had nothing else to gain money and profit they used to collect the wild animals from the jungles and bring them to public places to show people and began charging the money to looks at them…STOP THIS MADNESS. Wild animals are belong in the jungles. BAN & CLOSE all these zoos across the globe…We do not live in stone age anymore…

Stop imprisoning elephants in zoos – they do not belong there. Who goes to zoos anymore anyhow – people have outgrown this form of entertainment and children certainly are not interested

  13. He didn’t have much of a life did he. 40 years a captive- what did he do to deserve it? Don’t replace him and sentence another creature to life imprisonment.

  14. Elephants are such wonderful, caring, social animals that should never be imprisoned or forced into submission. They are intelligent animals that need the company of other elephants. This is inexcusable and unacceptable.

  15. As you can see: Elephant’s at the zoo doesn’t work for the animal. For all the money you gain from tourist why don’t you show robot attractions instead.

  16. Darlene Avery says:

This poor elephant did not have a life. You and your penchant for vile profit took it away from him. Do NOT replace him and sentence another innocent elephant to this horrific life of terror and pain. Elephants belong in the wild. NO more damn zoos…….unless we could put YOU in one for the rest of your pathetic life.

  17. B. Maurene White says:

Arthritis is caused by improper unnatural diet which poor Bong Su likely suffered along with confinement pain and emotional suffering. Damn tis disgusting abuse of animals and all its perpetrators to hell.

  18. I thought Australis was better than this.

Zoos are not necessary. Close them all.

  19. michelle taylor says:

Disgusting animal abuse is not acceptable.Ban zoos. They are cruel and barbaric.Melbourne zoo has a shocking reputation for its uncaring attitude and relentless animal abuse!

  20. WHAT WRONG WITH MANKIND IN THIS MODERN WORLD–MODERN TECHNOLOGY–YOU TUBE–PUBLIC TV–STOP KEEPING ANIMALS IN ZOOS/CONFINEMENTS FOR YOUR OWN BLOOD MONEY/PROFITS–NO ONE WANTS TO SEE ELEPHANTS OR ANY ANIMALS IN CAPTIVITY ,KNOWING THE STRESS CAUSED UPON THEM—RELEASE ALL ELEPHANTS NOW TO A WILD LIFE SANCTUARY…WHO THE HELL WILL BE HAPPY TO SEE ANIMALS IN ZOOS– BUT YOU SCUMS —BECAUSE YOU GET BLOOD MONEY FROM PUBLIC FOR ZOO ENTRANCES—-PEOPLE DO NOT PATRONIZE ANY ZOO AND TELL YOUR CHILDREN ANIMALS ARE SUFFERING IN ZOOS AND IT’S NOT NATURAL FOR THEM.
