Target: Illinois Attorney General, Lisa Madigan
Goal: Charge animal abuser under the Illinois Humane Care for Animals Act and secure the welfare of his remaining animals.
An estimated 60 cats and nearly one dozen dogs were found starved to death among more than 30 other malnourished and sick animals at a residence in Bloomington, Illinois. Curtis Cleary inherited the home and the animals from his late girlfriend Catherine Hedges, a devoted animal advocate. Cleary was arrested on separate charges and needs just $5,000 to be released and have the animals returned. Please sign this petition and urge the Illinois Attorney General to charge and prosecute Cleary for animal neglect and find refuge for the remaining animals.
Cleary was originally investigated for aggravated assault after his current girlfriend, also living in the house, called the police when Cleary fired shots at her. It was during the police response that the dead and dying animals were discovered. Although the police saw the state of the animals firsthand, they will remain under the care of Cleary and his girlfriend upon his release. Cleary and his girlfriend currently face no charges regarding the neglected and murdered animals. While Cleary is in jail, the animals are under the care of his girlfriend, who was witness to the neglect and did nothing to stop it.
The Illinois Humane Care for Animals Act requires that owners provide adequate food, water, shelter, and care for animals. It is the responsibility of the Illinois Department of Agriculture to respond to suspected mistreatment or neglect of animals. Cleary and his girlfriend have neglected the animals to such a degree that many starved to death, and yet he has no charges of animal cruelty or neglect against them.
Please sign this petition and urge the Illinois Attorney General to charge and prosecute Cleary for the neglect and murder of a number of animals. The remaining animals must be protected from Cleary’s “care” and find refuge in sanctuaries to hopefully regain their strength and health.
Dear Attorney General Madigan,
Recently, Bloomfield, Illinois police discovered nearly one dozen dogs starved to death among more than 30 other malnourished and sick animals. Curtis Cleary had inherited the house and animals from his late girlfriend Catherine Hedges. Hedges was a tireless animal advocate who had rescued the animals for adoption. After being arrested on separate charges, Cleary currently faces no animal cruelty charges or penalties for the murder and neglect of the animals.
As the Attorney General of Illinois I am calling on you to fully investigate Cleary and his live-in girlfriend in order to stop the continued mistreatment of animals. It is unacceptable for the police to have overlooked the obvious crime of animal neglect and murder that was reported at the Cleary residence. Cleary is in violation of the Humane Care for Animals Act and must be charged and prosecuted for breaking the law.
Please do not let this crime go unnoticed and save the remaining animals from further torment by Cleary and his girlfriend.
