Use Sustainable Tourism to Save the Jordan River

Target: Government of Israel, Government of Jordan

Goal: To generate funds through tourism in order to rehabilitate the Jordan River

Years ago the Jordan River was thriving; it was full of clean water and fish. Today, the Jordan River is murky, polluted, and weak. By bringing together the governments of Israel and Jordan and establishing the Jordan River as a tourist attraction, the river can finally be restored.

The natural flow of the Jordan River was once important for generating electricity to power the area, but almost all of the water that used to extend across the region has disappeared. In attempt to reinstate flow, surrounding villages have dumped raw sewage, partially treated sewage, and wastewater into the basin. The water is so polluted that it cannot even be used to water crops for fear that it would kill them, and naturally adjacent flora and fauna have been damaged in the process.

Local officials from Israel and Jordan are finally working together to restore the river, as well as the surrounding natural habitats. The greatest concern is proper funding, which is why the idea of tourism as a means to generate necessary investment has come up. The area is rich in natural wildlife and by capitalizing on this, tourism will essentially create a win-win situation for all parties by stimulating the local economy for the benefit of the environment.

Sign this petition urging officials from both nations to see this plan of action carried through. Safe ecotourism can be developed around the Jordan River and can be extremely beneficial. Not only will tourism help restore a natural environment, but it will provide safe water for farmers and other locals, potentially reestablish electricity production, and restore necessary flow to the Dead Sea.

Dear Government Officials,

It is finally time to take measures in saving the Jordan River. Anyone familiar with the area can see that the river is not what it used to be, and it is important that proper steps be taken immediately to see that the river is not further degraded. While funding such projects is tricky, tourism can be a very valuable tool with a multitude of benefits.

Please work together in taking action to protect the Jordan River through the use of ecotourism. This is the most efficient and most natural way to raise the needed funds, while also drawing attention to the value of the natural environment.
