Remove ‘Anne Frank’ Costume from Amazon

Target: Jeff Bezos, Chairman, President and CEO of Amazon.com, Inc.

Goal: Remove “Anne Frank” costumes from Amazon.com.

Amazon vendors are being accused of trivializing the Holocaust by selling a Halloween costume depicting Anne Frank. The costume was originally available on numerous websites as an “Anne Frank costume for girls,” according to RT. Most of these sites have reportedly removed the costume, after critics such as the Anti-Defamation League’s Carlos Galindo-Elvira accused vendors of insensitivity towards the Holocaust. “There r better ways 2 commemorate Anne Frank. This is not one. We should not trivialize her memory as a costume,” Galindo-Elvira tweeted.

As one of the most well-known victims of the Holocaust, Anne Frank died at age 15, after she and her family were arrested in the Nazi-occupied Netherlands and sent to concentration camps. Years later, her diary became one of the most prolific works on the Holocaust, and has today sold over 35 million copies. While the costume has been removed from other websites, it was still available at the time of writing on Amazon.com, albeit with a different name. One vendor, Smiffy’s, describes it as a “World War II Evacuee Girl Fancy Dress Costume.”

“This outfit can be worn for many different occasions such as World War times, Evacuee times and also as a street urchin,” the description reads. The reviews were largely negative.

“Sadly, Anne Frank was not evacuated in time. This costume is in very poor taste, especially given the rise in white supremacist neo nazi activity in the US. We should all be learning this sad history, but it’s not appropriate for children’s dress up play,” one reviewer stated.

If you agree the costume might be in poor taste, please sign our petition calling for its removal.

PETITION LETTER

Dear Mr. Bezos,

A costume depicting diarist and Holocaust victim Anne Frank is currently available for sale through Amazon.com. The costume has sparked an international controversy, with critics claiming it trivializes Anne Frank and the Holocaust.

“I am appalled by this ‘costume’. Over one million Jewish children were killed by the Nazis during World War II… This ‘costume’ is beyond being in poor taste. It’s disgraceful,” one reviewer stated. Another simply wrote, “The yellow star must be optional? This item needs to be removed.”

Given the controversy surrounding the costume, we call on you to ensure the item is removed from Amazon.com.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
