Convict Guatemala’s Former Dictator for Genocide

Target: Josue Baquiax, President of the Supreme Court of Guatemala

Goal: Convict Rios Montt.

Former Guatemalan dictator Jose Efrain Rios Montt is now facing his second trial for genocide. Rios Montt is accused of ordering the massacre of at least 1771 indigenous Ixil Mayans during his time in power in the early 1980s. Montte’s dictatorship is often cited by human rights advocates as one of the most brutal eras in Guatemala’s modern history, and a low point in the country’s half-century-long civil war.

His regime was accused of seeking to commit genocide against the Ixil Mayans, who were thought to be too sympathetic towards Marxist guerrillas that were staging an insurgency against the government.

In 2013, Guatemala garnered international attention when Rios Montt was found guilty of genocide and crimes against humanity – but the victory was short-lived. That conviction has since been overturned on procedural grounds.

Now, a second trial is taking place, and its time to once again send the message: convict Rios Montt.

PETITION LETTER

Dear Mr. President Baquiax,

As head of Guatemala’s Supreme Court, we call on you and your colleagues to convict Rios Montt. Montt’s regime was allegedly responsible for the deaths of potentially thousands of Ixil Mayans during a scorched-earth campaign against Marxist guerrillas in the 1980s. For decades, human rights advocates have been demanding Rios Montt face justice for allegedly ordering these killings. In 2013, Guatemala made history by finally convicting the former dictator, only to see the conviction overturned on procedural grounds. Now, Guatemala has a second chance, with Rios Montt again facing trial.

The people of Guatemala – and the world – only want one outcome: convict Rios Montt.

Sincerely,
