Applaud Academy for Expelling Harvey Weinstein

Target: John Bailey, President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences

Goal: Praise the Academy’s decision to expel alleged sexual predator.

Following a tidal wave of recent accusations that famed producer Harvey Weinstein has harassed and assaulted numerous women over a career spanning decades, the organization responsible for hosting the annual Academy Awards has decided to expel this industry giant from their ranks. After members overwhelmingly voted for his removal, Weinstein became just the second person in the Academy’s history to be expelled.

At least 30 women from over three decades of working with Weinstein have emerged in recent days and weeks with their personal accounts of how this influential producer allegedly harassed or assaulted them both on and off set. While Weinstein vehemently denies all accusations, a dark pattern of predatory behavior appears to be emerging, and it is long past due that the industry start recognizing and taking this issue seriously.

This is a small step in the right direction for Hollywood. While there is still much work to be done, and the Academy must still come to terms with many others in its membership who stand accused of similar misdeeds, we should thank the Academy for doing the right thing and sending a message that Weinstein’s alleged actions will not be tolerated. Sign this petition to thank the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ president for ensuring that this important vote and decision were made.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Bailey,

I wish to thank you for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ recent vote to expel Harvey Weinstein. The many accusations that are emerging against this man are troubling and indicate a possible pattern of sexually predatory behavior against women in the film industry going back decades. By expelling Weinstein, you are sending a message that his alleged behavior will no longer be tolerated.

While it is important that Weinstein is removed, the Academy must continue to do more to address the systemic misogyny, harassment and abuse that women in Hollywood face. I thank you for taking this small but crucial step in the right direction, and urge you to continue to root out those accused of predatory behavior in the future.

Sincerely,
