Remove Climate Change Skeptic from UK Climate Change Committee

Target: Tim Yeo, UK Energy and Climate Change Committee Chair

Goal: Remove climate change denying Member of Parliament from Energy and Climate Change Committee

Peter Lilley, a conservative Member of Parliament in the United Kingdom, was recently appointed to the country’s Energy and Climate Change Committee, which oversees the environmental policies of the Department of Energy and Climate Change. Lilley has admitted to being skeptical of global warming and was one of very few Parliament members who voted against the country’s Climate Change Act. Lilley has been given the authority to determine the fate of the environment and must be replaced with someone who will make decisions based on scientific research.

Lilley publicly challenged the findings of a well-respected economist whose report demonstrates the effects climate change has had on the economy and the economic benefits of adopting clean energy practices. Lilley has stated that in light of the country’s recession, cheap and profitable fossil fuels should continue being used, regardless of the impact, rather than using more environmentally sound practices.

Instead of researching and funding sustainable energy, Lilley has recommended increasing funding for nuclear power and other dangerous energy sources. As the board member of an oil and gas company, he seems to be acting in his company’s best interest at the expense of future generations.

There have been other anti-science oil executives appointed to important environmental positions in the UK, which signals a dangerous backlash against the growing environmental movements around the world. In his new position as a member of the Climate Change Committee, Peter Lilley will play a role in determining the country’s environmental policies, while his top priority seems to be increasing profits for the oil industry.

Lilley must be removed from this position and replaced with someone who acknowledges the reality of climate change and will work to reverse its effects.

Dear Tim Yeo,

Peter Lilley’s recent appointment to the Energy and Climate Change Committee has raised some concern given his skepticism about the current research on global warming and his voting record on the subject of climate change.

This position gives him the power to influence the future of the environment and economy of your country, and the policies that he will be overseeing could affect other areas of the world. He has been given the responsibility to protect natural resources for future generations, but his positions on sustainable energy indicate that he is more focused on increasing profits for his company.

An overwhelming majority of scientific research has shown the reality of global warming and the need for policies that will reverse the damage that non-renewable energy sources have had on the environment. Lilley does not belong in a position that requires him to make decisions based on this evidence and should be replaced with someone who will take climate change seriously.

  1. A tiny, well-funded minority does not constitute a respectable body of scientific opinion.

  2. Dave Voisey says:

“Force Change” is a USA based organisation. If they are concerned, I as a UK citizen, am very concerned. To have all views represented on a committee is a good thing. But, not if the committee’s member has a financial interest.
