Save Starving Penguins from Extinction

Target: Andrew Wright, Executive Secretary for the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR)

Goal: Dedicate an area of East Antarctica as a marine reserve to protect vulnerable Adelie penguins and other wildlife.

Antarctic penguins are sensitive to changes in their environment, including those caused by climate change. After a massive glacier broke off in East Antarctica in 2010, it appears to have changed the local climate, resulting in colder summer seasons. This has resulted in a catastrophe for the local Adelie penguins. Out of a colony of 40,000 birds, only two living chicks survived the breeding season this year due to starvation.

Researchers say that the penguins could not find enough food due to the thicker ice, which resulted in a massive die-off of the colony’s chicks. Adelie penguins depend on krill as the basis of their diet, and they could be put at even greater risk if fisheries are allowed to exploit the region. With less food available, the long term future for Adelie penguins in East Antarctica appears bleak.

A marine reserve is necessary to ensure that these penguins have a chance for long-term survival. While such a sanctuary may not be able to reverse climate change caused by breaking glaciers, it would protect what krill remains so that the penguins can survive. Sign this petition to urge the international commission responsible for managing wildlife resources in the Antarctic to create this reserve before it is too late.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Wright,

A colony of 40,000 Adelie penguins suffered what has been called a “catastrophic breeding event,” where only two chicks survived this year’s breeding season. Thanks to local climate changes caused by the breakup of the Mertz Glacier in East Antarctica, the other chicks appeared to have starved as the penguins struggled to find enough food. With international fisheries eager to exploit the region for the same food resources that the penguins depend on, now is the time to create a marine reserve to keep the fishing boats at bay.

While a marine reserve will not reverse the negative consequences caused by climate change, it will provide hope for the long-term future of the Adelie penguins and other Antarctic species. I ask that you do all that you can to work with the members of your commission toward establishing this necessary sanctuary.

Sincerely,

  1. Fossil fuel use by man is driving climate change. And overharvesting of fish and other sea life is depriving other species of food they need to survive. We have a responsibility to save other species, not take everything for ourselves. We must protect the penguins’ food supply and their habitat. Human greed and neglect are the most destructive forces on Earth. They need to be stopped.

It is our moral responsibility to do whatever we can to help the Artartica penguins and ALL wild life survive and flourish. Man cannot ignore what is happening with climate change and we have the means to help this specific species and ALL others and that is WHAT WE MUST DO! We cannot put off what is needed to save ALL living creatures. It is our responsibility as guardians of this precious planet to act accordingly if we are to save life.

  3. WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IS: WHY, WHY, WHY THE COMMISSION (Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources CCAMLR) HAS DONE NOTHING UP TO THIS POINT?

WE NOW KNOW THAT OUT OF A COLONY OF 40,000 ADELIE PENGUINS ONLY TWO CHICKS SURVIVED!! SO, WHAT IS CCAMLR PAID TO DO… WHY IS IT EVEN NECESSARY FOR THIS PETITION TO PUT A PITCHFORK BEHIND THE COMMISSION? SHAME, CCAMLR, SHAME, SHAME, SHAME!!!
