Drop Charges Against Man Beaten By White Supremacists

Target: Al S. Thomas Jr., Chief of Charlottesville Police Department

Goal: Do not charge DeAndre Harris, who was allegedly beaten by white nationalists at a neo-Nazi rally, with ‘assaulting’ one of the men who attacked him.

DeAndre Harris, a black man who was allegedly brutally beaten by white nationalists during the chaos of the far-right rally in Charlottesville, VA, is absurdly being charged with assaulting one of the same men who beat him up. Harris was at the rally to counter-protest the neo-Nazi agenda. Upon discovering he was being charged, he immediately turned himself over to police, and was released by a judge on an unsecured bond.

Video of Harris being bludgeoned went viral and spurred much criticism that the police were not doing enough to bring his attackers to justice — a criticism that is rightfully intensifying since he is facing “unlawful wounding” charges based on the personal statements of self-described “Southern nationalist” Harold Ray Crews, one of Harris’s attackers. Crews is the chairman of a chapter of neo-Confederate group League of the South, which promotes the domination of American society by those of European descent.

Although Crews was injured that day and submitted evidence to prove it, video of a “completely separate” incident shows Crews being hit by a white man wearing black, after Harris was already in the emergency room. According to Harris’s attorney, “it’s not physically possible it could be an attack by DeAndre Harris,” based on the video evidence. These charges are utterly unjust, and simply another way of blaming the victim of a racially motivated attack. Sign below to demand that the charges against DeAndre Harris be dropped.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chief Thomas,

The assault charges being brought against DeAndre Harris, the victim of alleged attacks by a hate group, are unfounded and unjust, and must be dropped. The personal statement of Harold Ray Crews, a self-described “Southern nationalist” who attacked Crews for his race and for counter-protesting the Charlottesville neo-Nazi rally, should not be enough to put Harris through yet another terrible ordeal.

As Harris’s attorney stated, “The city of Charlottesville is allowing these same white supremacists to re-victimize my client DeAndre Harris on the word of a single extremist.” Video evidence shows Crews being attacked in a completely separate incident, when Harris was already in the hospital for his injuries. The Charlottesville Police Department must stand against this kind of discrimination and hatred. I urge you to drop the charges against DeAndre Harris.

Sincerely,
