Save Hippos from Anthrax

Target: Johnson Ndokosho, Deputy Director of Namibia’s Wildlife and National Parks

Goal: Save African hippo population from future anthrax outbreaks.

Over 100 hippos in Namibia have died within the past week from what is feared to be an outbreak of anthrax. This is not the first time for such a thing to happen, and officials claim there is not much the area can do to prevent future outbreaks, as the wildlife cannot be moved.

While anthrax is a strong infection and it may be difficult to protect the animals, it is not impossible. The wildlife cannot be moved, but the area can be properly screened for anthrax, and so can the wildlife. Vaccinations can be given to the hippos, and the contaminated areas can be blocked off until they are ‘clean.’ It is defeatist to claim that there is not much they can do when many efforts can still be made.

Hippos are an extremely vulnerable species already hunted and killed for their meat or by trophy hunters. We must not allow the species’ numbers to shrink further, to the point where they become near extinct. Sign this petition to demand the African government do everything in their power to save these animals.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Deputy Director Ndokosho,

Over 100 hippos have died in the last week, and anthrax infections are likely the culprit. Officials are claiming there is not much they can do about it, but efforts can still be made. Hippos and other wildlife can be vaccinated, while the areas of wilderness and water can be blocked off until they are purified.

The hippo is already vulnerable due to being hunted for its meat or by trophy hunters. You must not allow this species’ numbers to drop further due to a dangerous infection. There are plenty of efforts that can be made to protect these animals before they are close to extinction. Save the hippo by fighting anthrax as hard as possible.

Sincerely,
